ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT

JOB TITLE: ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT
DEPARTMENT: FINANCE
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: DIRECTOR OF FINANCE
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: NONE
STATUS: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
HOURS OF WORK: M-F, flexible start/end time, 20-25 hours/week
COMPENSATION: $20.00/HR
POSTIION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Director of Finance & Assistant Director of Finance, apply principles of accounting to analyze financial information, prepare financial reports, and compile information utilizing appropriate accounting control procedures.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Create, maintain and process various accounting-related records
Enter financial information into the accounting system in a compliant manner
Compile, sum, and sort documents, such as invoices, checks and cash receipts, substantiating that business transactions are accurately recorded
Provide data entry for accounts receivables/payables
Assist with processing cash receipts/deposits
Assist with processing payroll
Assist with reconciling various accounts and invoices
Compile information and/or generate basic financial reports for the department
Perform general clerical duties to include but not limited to: preparing correspondence, photocopying, faxing, mailing, emailing, filing, answering phone calls, responding to emails and relaying general communications for the department
Answer basic internal inquiries from staff related to activity and project updates
Provide a professional image of the City"s Finance Department and demonstrate a helpful, cooperative work style
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required. Strong knowledge of accounting principles
Must be competent with MS Word, Excel, Outlook
Associate degree preferred, but will accept High School diploma with 2-3 years of experience in an office environment
Experience with a public employer is preferred but not required
Professional demeanor with a cooperative, helpful attitude
Must pass a background check and have a clear criminal record
Must be eligible to work in the United States
Ability to read, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them in a positive and appropriate manner
Knowledge of computer systems and modern day office practices. Ability to input access and retrieve information from computer; ability to use calculator by touch accurately

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
