The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is hiring lifeguards.Under direct supervision of a Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Staff IV, this position coordinates programs, oversees participants, facility operations, organized group activities, and monitors adult, youth or family activities and special events. This position will require additional on the job specialized skills, training and certifications.This is a temporary, non-benefited position to work up to 1559 hours annually. This position will work various hours per week, to include, evening, weekends and holidays in an indoor setting. Minimum Qualifications: Minimum of 15 years or olderObtain and maintain current certification as an Ellis and Associates Lifeguard (including CPR Pro/AED and First Aid) or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. (training provided by PRCS)Experience in volunteerism or participation in recreation activities is desired.The City of Valdez considers this a safety-sensitive position. Successful applicants must pass a pre-employment drug test. Successful applicants over the age of 18 must submit to and pass a criminal background check. Positions are open until filled, review of applications begins 8/30/24.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Provide customer service to program patrons.Assists in coordination and implementing general recreation programs at an assigned facility, center or events.May perform cleaning or general maintenance. Report any major maintenance issues.Maintains order and discipline by enforcing rules, regulations and safety precautions and reports to supervisor.Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions, and intervenes when necessary.Acts as a team member maintaining a cooperative attitude with employees, supervisors and staff.Performs specific duties outlined per activity or event.Attend department and facility staff meetings and in-service trainings, as required.Have knowledge and carry out work at the front desk which include registration of guests, cash register operations, and other front desk procedures.Maintains administrative records, to include, attendance, equipment, facility cleaning logs, program registration and program rosters.Must render aid, call 911, and stabilize injuries until assistance arrives.Enforces patron conduct protocols for immediate suspension or ejections for up to 24 hours as outlined in Rules of Conduct.Other related duties as assigned. Aquatics Related Duties and Responsibilities: Ensure safety of patrons utilizing the 10/20 Patron Protection Standards.Perform any necessary rescues and care in accordance with Ellis and Associates Standards to include water extrication, spinal immobilization, CPR, AED, Oxygen Administration, and First Aid.Ensure that Health Department and Ellis and Associates standards are met.Must maintain rescue readiness at all times, including physical, emotional and psychological readiness to respond to emergencies.Must respond to emergency situations such as power outage, fire alarm, distressed swimmer, and medical emergencies as the first responder in accordance with the Valdez Swimming Pool Emergency Action Plans, Policies and Procedures and Ellis and Associates.Wear required uniform when on duty, present yourself in a professional mannerWear corrective lenses at all times, when medically necessaryHave Knowledge, adhere to and enforce facility rules as well as lifeguard policies and proceduresKnowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics: Demonstrates excellent communication skills with staff and patrons, both written and verbal.Ability to work effectively with various age groups.Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks.Follows instructions-both verbal and written.
