JOB SUMMARY

The Training Sergeant is responsible for the development, implementation, management and evaluation of training programs for the Villa Rica Police Department. This position works to ensure all personnel are qualified to perform their assigned job duties through high quality training programs. The Training Sergeant is a sworn position and must be a Georgia POST certified peace officer. Work involves a wide variety of administrative duties including coordinating departmental training, presenting training material, creating training programs, creating Georgia POST data entries, maintaining training records, and maintaining effective working relationships with other regional trainers to help carry out the departments mission. Clerical tasks include data entry, filing, and purchasing.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees departmental training programs;
  • Creates, develops, or obtains training curricula and materials;
  • Trains personnel in proper work methods;
  • Analyzes, reviews and advises on personnel performance in a training setting;
  • Maintains files from Field Training Officer program;
  • Conducts agency annul recertification training as required on all firearms, Taser, critical tasks, Governors Mandate training, and other as required;
  • Advises command staff on training needs, program development, and the need for external resources related to training programs;
  • Gathers, analyzes and preserves records on agency related uses of force, pursuits, and other critical areas for the development of training programs, remedial training of personnel, and certification;
  • Conducts timely training on legal updates, case law, and other areas as changes occur;
  • Conducts and oversees community outreach programs such as the Citizens Academy, firearms classes, Youth Academy, and others as developed/assigned;
  • Maintain positive relationships with other training officers within the area to create a resource pool for enhanced training opportunities;
  • Maintains police training equipment;
  • Ensures proper and accurate documentation is created and stored of all training items completed within the agency;
  • Identifies qualified instructors, both inside and outside the agency, to assist in completing departmental training goals;
  • Creates an annual training calendar of all classes to be hosted by the agency and coordinate with external bodies as needed to approve, complete, and successfully close out each scheduled event;
  • Completes POST applications for new officers, specialized officer certifications, and agency data as required;
  • Completes required internal training for newly hired officers;
  • Oversees, supervises, and assesses the performance of employees assigned to the training unit;
  • Acts as department quartermaster and maintain inventory within the equipment locker;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of employee supervision, including work planning, assignment, review and evaluation;
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence and laws governing the custody of persons;
  • Knowledge of growth and crime pattern trends in the City and surrounding areas;
  • Knowledge of law enforcement concepts and terminology, including patrol techniques, jail operations, criminal investigation and crime prevention;
  • Knowledge of laws and court decisions relating to law enforcement, search and seizure, suspects and prisoners rights and custody and protection of evidence;
  • Knowledge of operational principles and practices of criminal investigation;
  • Knowledge of court and trial procedures;
  • Knowledge of use and effects of law enforcement weapons; methods of self-defense and physical restraint;
  • Knowledge of Villa Rica Police Department, policies and procedures;
  • Knowledge of geographic layout of the City of Villa Rica;
  • Knowledge of report preparation and record keeping;
  • Skill in planning, directing, supervising, reviewing and evaluating the work of others;
  • Skill in training others in work procedures;
  • Skill in interpreting, applying and explaining complex laws and regulations;
  • Skill in correctly interpreting a given situation and taking appropriate action under a variety of conditions;
  • Skill in exercising tact, self-restraint, judgment and strategy in dealing with people of all races, ethnicities and socio-economic groups and who may have emotional or physical difficulties;
  • Skill in observing and remembering details of events, names, faces, numbers and physical descriptions;
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining clear, accurate and concise reports and files;
  • Skill in exercising sound independent judgment in emergency or stressful situations;
  • Ability to operate the computer and various programs;
  • Ability to establish and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; and
  • Ability and willingness to work variable hours as needed to complete job tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is performed either in an office environment or in a variety of field and office settings and may require exposure to dangerous and life-threatening situations. Must be willing to carry a firearm on and off the job; mentally and physically capable of taking the life of another, if justified; willing to work any hour of the day or night (shift work), overtime, weekends, on call and holidays; work at any location in the City and travel on specific assignments.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and five (5) years of work experience as a certified Peace Officer including two (2) years as a supervisor.

Special Qualifications:

Possession of a valid State of Georgia Drivers License. Must possess a current Georgia POST peace officers certification and be in good standing with POST. Must be General Instructor Certified, Firearms Instructor Certified, and Use of Force Instructor Certified.

Preferred Qualifications:

Department Training Officer certification, Taser Instructor, Asp Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor and knowledge of POST Gateway reporting system.
