Job Summary: This position is responsible for manual work of a routine nature that involves heavy physical labor as a member of the streets department crew. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Streets Manager.
Major Duties:
The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.
- Participates in street, sidewalk, and stormwater system maintenance, including concrete and asphalt pavement.
- Conducts Right of Way maintenance and vegetation control, including pruning trees and tree removal when necessary.
- Constructs various Right of Way improvement projects.
- Assists with the fabrication of street name markers and roadway signs.
- Install street name markers and roadway signs.
- Assists with traffic control.
- Maintains and repairs heavy equipment.
- Operates heavy equipment.
- Assists with winter weather operations including salt spreading and snow plowing.
- Provides vital support to emergency response partners, helping protect essential services, and restoring those services following an emergency.
- Performs other duties as apparent or assigned.
Knowledge Required by the Position:
- Knowledge of City and departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety rules and regulations.
- Skill in performing general equipment maintenance duties on vehicle, daily check sheet.
- Ability to interpret instructions and efficiently carry them out with minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to communicate clearly and in a pleasant manner with the general public, elected officials, and other City employees.
- Ability to follow necessary safety precautions in all areas of assignment, and duties.
Supervisory Controls: The Streets Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and reviews completed work for the nature and propriety of the final results.
Guidelines: Guidelines include City codes, departmental and safety policies and
procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
Complexity: The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting of objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds, moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions.
Scope and Effect: This position is responsible for the maintenance of streets, sidewalks, right of ways, and the storm drain systems throughout the city, ensuring a clean and safe environment for all customers and citizens, and a positive public image for the City
Personal Contacts: Contacts are typically with co-workers and residents.
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are typically accessed to exchange information and provide services.
Physical Demands: The work is typically performed with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, and bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
Work Environment: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, irritating chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather. This work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves. This work may require employees to be called in after hours in the event of a emergency.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility: None.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent required; valid State of Georgia Driver's License; equivalent combination of education and experience.
The City of Villa Rica is prepared to cover some relocation costs for out of state candidates in addition to assisting with temporary housing for a specific period until permanent housing is secured.
