The Property and Evidence Unit is part of the Support Division and provides logistical support to the Police Department. All items that come into the possession of the department are tracked through a computerized evidence management system, checked out to court and forensic labs, returned to owners and, if unclaimed or no longer needed, destroyed/disposed. Four Property and Evidence Technicians support the unit as well as additional sworn personnel. This position reports to a Police Sergeant.
The duties of the Property and Evidence Technician include receiving, issuing, inventorying and destroying property and evidence records, utilizing computer software; ensuring records are consistently and accurately maintained in accordance with departmental procedure as well as City guidelines for cash control; conducting periodic inspections of inventory; preparing items for auction; testifying in court regarding chain of custody as necessary; responding to inquiries (in person and via telephone) regarding property and evidence; and assisting in performing the destruction of weapons, drugs and evidence when no longer needed by the courts.

Criminal History: Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals). Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, excluding traffic violations which are discussed separately, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last 5 years.
Traffic Violations: Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.
Drugs: Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult. Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.
