THE DIVISION
The City of Visalia's Community Development Department, Building Division, serves the city by providing a wide range of inspections covering residential, commercial and industrial projects. The Division is responsible for plan check services, permit processing and inspection. The Division’s staff is committed to customer service, safety, and providing high-quality support and services to other city departments and the public.
POSITION
We are recruiting for Building Inspector. Depending on qualifications, this position may be hired as a Combined Building Inspector. The selected Inspector will perform routine field inspections of industrial, commercial, and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling including inspecting foundation, structural, framing, plastering, plumbing, heating, and electrical installations. Examples of duties include:
Perform field review of plans and specifications
Maintain records and prepare appropriate paperwork, correspondence, records, and reports. Issues building permits, correction notices, and stop work orders
Resolve disputes between building division staff and developers, contractor, architects, engineers, and general public
Coordinate final inspections with other departments and agencies
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will possess a high level of professionalism, have sound knowledge of construction trades, engineering and construction management principles, and customer service skills. The position requires excellent judgement, integrity, and organizational skills. The ideal candidate will be a self-driven individual, willing to take on new challenges, effectively communicate with coworkers, supervisors, support staff, and be able to work on multiple projects at any given time. Experience in areas such as building permit plan check, construction management, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, and California Building Code (CBC) compliance is highly desirable. Knowledge in municipal work such as state and federal regulatory compliance, and implementation of local government policy and procedures is also desirable. The ideal candidate may have a demonstrated area of expertise.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Three years responsible journey level experience in construction and building trades.
Possession of or ability to obtain ICC Building Inspector Certificate within one year of appointment.
Building inspection technology or ICC courses are desirable.
In addition, a Combined Building Inspector requires one or more additional ICC certifications in Plumbing, Electrical or Mechanical by time of appointment.
