Summary - Incumbent serves as Equipment Operator for the City of Warsaw Public Works department, responsible for driving/operating various trucks and heavy equipment in clearing and maintaining city streets and rights-of-ways.

Minimum Class B CDL is required or ability to obtain within designated time after hire.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Operates a variety of contractor equipment and trucks used in construction and maintenance and repair of city streets, roads/alleys for the purpose of sewer/storm repair which may include permitted/non-permitted Confined Space Entry, sidewalk construction/reconstruction, and other projects as assigned. Operates various types of equipment and vehicles such as dump trucks, garbage trucks, mowers, snow plows, street sweepers, graders, loaders, bobcats, bulldozers, fogger, salt spreaders, traffic line painter, roller, cement mixer, pick-up trucks, cars, vans, and related pneumatic or hydraulic equipment and tools. Clears and maintains roadways/property hauls and spreads road materials, including loading, hauling and unloading various items such as snow, dirt, debris, brush, discarded furniture and appliances, trees/limbs, cement and construction material and refuse, including mowing/ trimming grass, pruning trees and shrubs, removing fallen tree limbs, shoveling/sweeping/blowing snow, spreading salt on roads and walkways, pulling weeds, raking leaves, operating chainsaws, mowers, bush hogs and chippers. Periodically performs duties of Laborer in repairing streets and alleys, including loading/unloading truck, shoveling and spreading road patching materials, and sealing cracks. Assists in maintaining trucks and equipment, such as washing/cleaning, maintaining fluid levels, lubricating, and changing tires and filters, monitors/checks vehicle lighting systems, brakes, horn, safety devices, and gauges, such as oil, water, air and fuel, and assists in performing preventive maintenance as needed, such as washing, maintaining fluid levels, and lubricating.
Assists with flagging/traffic control at work sites as assigned. Ability to occasionally work extended, evening and/or weekend hours as needed and serves on 24-hour call for emergency situations including snow plowing. Must adhere to all city policy including drug testing per INDOT. Performs related duties as assigned.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGES – Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), minimum Class B. High school diploma or GED preferred. Knowledge and experience in operating and maintaining heavy equipment, and understanding of basic construction principles. Ability to properly operate a variety of trucks, equipment and power tools, including dump truck, snow plow, street sweepers, graders, loaders, bobcats, bulldozers, fogger, salt spreader, traffic line painter, jack hammer, compactor, roller, cement mixer, chain saws, mowers, bush hog and chippers. Working knowledge of local geography and street names, and ability to expediently locate and drive to project sites as assigned. Ability to operate various equipment for purpose of sewer/storm repairs, road reconstruction, sidewalk reconstruction, and other construction and reconstruction projects as assigned. Ability to perform repairs and maintenance duties in a permitted/non-permitted Confined Space while following OSHA and general construction guidelines as required. Ability to read and interpret vehicle gauges and dials, and assist in maintaining department vehicles and equipment. Ability to identify safety precautions, and respond rationally and decisively to emergency situations. Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including exerting sustained physical effort, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, standing/walking for long periods, sitting for long periods, climbing ladders, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, handling/ grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, close and far vision. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form. Ability to work with others in a team environment; Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to occasionally work extended, evening and/or weekend hours as needed . Ability to maintain personal composure and tact during difficult situations. Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, and apply OSHA safety regulations applicable to work performed, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Possession of a valid Indiana Driver’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and demonstrated safe driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT - Incumbent's duties involve driving for long periods, hearing sounds/communication, standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dirt dust and machinery, traffic and fumes, lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, shoveling, raking, pushing/pulling objects, reaching, bending, handling/grasping/fingering objects. Although duties may involve continuous physical exertion, prolonged intense physical strain is not associated with normal duties. Incumbent performs a majority of duties outdoors involving exposure to normal hazards associated with construction and maintenance of streets / property, including traffic, noise, odors, grease, dirt, dust, vehicle fumes, unguarded pets, insects, extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
