Summary

The City of Wasilla is currently recruiting for our Seasonal Roads Laborer summer position!

Are you a hard worker who loves to assist others in helping complete a project? Do you value working towards a common goal and serving the community? Are you looking for a fulltime, seasonal summer position with every other Friday off?

Then the Seasonal Roads Laborer position might be for you! This position assists the Roads Department personnel at the City of Wasilla in the maintenance and repair of City of roads including painting road lines, repairing failed asphalt, sealing cracks, replacing signs, and operating equipment and vehicles as applicable to each task. No experience necessary, we will train!

Job Duties

Essential Functions:
The responsibilities listed below are illustrative of the various types of duties that may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Assist with replacing signs, cleaning culverts, painting road lines, repairing failed asphalt, sealing cracks, and cleaning storm drains.
  • Assist skilled workers as assigned. This may include jobs such as operating an attenuator vehicle behind brush cutting operations, repairing potholes, and pumping flooded areas.
  • Safely operate hand tools applicable to the trade. Examples: drills, Impact wrenches, reciprocating saws, chop saws, and concrete saws
  • Clean, lubricate and change wear parts on heavy equipment.
  • Shop maintenance, cleaning out and washing vehicles.
  • Trash removal from along roadways.
  • Lawn mowing, weed whipping, shoveling, racking, etc.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to listen to, understand, and follow directions to perform duties as assigned.
  • Ability to operate trucks up to 10,000 pounds GVW.

Experience and/or Education:

  • High school graduate and/or GED preferred.
  • Laborer experience preferred.
  • CDL preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • A valid State of Alaska driver’s license.
  • A current (dated within 30 days of request) driving record obtained from the State of Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles.

Physical Demands:
Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas. Prolonged periods of standing and walking. Physical range of motion required to perform tasks related to the job as well as the use of muscles for physical labor. Must be able to lift 75 lbs. at a time. Must be able to work some nights or weekends.

Work Environment:
Duties require working outdoors, may be subject to adverse weather conditions. This position operates on a 40 hour per week schedule with a half hour unpaid lunch.

Scope and Accountability/Supervisory Responsibility:

The Position is expected to participate in safety meetings and follow instructions. Responsibilities include following instructions to safely complete assigned tasks. Work is performed with moderate independence, judgment, and latitude within prescribed policies and procedures, requiring firmness, tact, and discretion in carrying out overall responsibilities.
