When assigned to the Senior Center, a Food Handlers Card is required or the ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment or promotion.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to operate assigned equipment & vehicles and adhere to all safety guidelines. Possible exposure to irate citizens.
- Plans, organizes, and implements specialized recreation activities, classes, programs, and special events
- Creates press releases, displays, posters, brochures, and flyers for programs and facilities
- Provides guidance on publicity, vendor, and instructor requirements, registration procedures, and purchasing for programs, events, and activities
- Assists in setting up recreation classes, leagues, and events in areas of focus as assigned
- Ensures the safety of all program, activity, and event participants and providers by following City policies and procedures and monitoring participants' activity
- Monitors recreation facilities to ensure security, the proper working order of equipment, cleanliness of the area, and monitoring for potential maintenance hazards
- Performs routine administrative support duties, including composing correspondence, typing, copying, and filing
- Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment and orders as necessary utilizing approved procurement methods
- Greets visitors to the office and recreational facilities
- Promotes and ensures the safety for participants
- Provides general information to the public, including but not limited to via telephone lines, newsletters, and the internet
- Assists the Recreation Programmer II with all duties and community center responsibilities, as assigned
- Promotes and administers facility rentals
- Assists other Community Services Employees/Instructors, as needed
- Understands and upholds provisions of City ordinances, resolutions, home rule charter, etc., as it applies to Community Services
- Works alternate schedules as assigned, which may include morning, evening, and weekend shifts
- Accurately processes financial deposits and reports with Finance by utilizing established procedures, registration and financial software, a calculator, and Microsoft Office programs as assigned
- May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required
When assigned to the Front Desk:
- Trains PT Recreation Attendants in excellent customer service, utilization of the registration software, and proper departmental policies and procedures
- Manages the Parks & Community Services social media presence, website, flyers, marketing collateral, and electronic sign graphics
- Coordinates the concession offerings through use of inventory tracking, organization, and reordering as necessary
- Periodically checks data entered into registration software for accuracy, policy adherence, etc.
- Coordinates marketing efforts with City Media Specialist
When assigned to Recreation:
- Plans and coordinates recreational activities, classes, programs, and special events for community members of all ages.
- Maximizes use of Community Center spaces to achieve maximum benefit for community members of all ages.
- Schedules and coordinates leagues, schedules, registrations, and officials as needed.
- Orders and maintains sporting equipment.
- Maintains instructor files, records, and reports to ensure fair & accurate pay for instructors
- Oversees seasonal preschool program to ensure compliance with policies and procedures
- Oversees Camp Watauga and assists as needed to ensure compliance with policies and procedures
When assigned to Special Events:
- Coordinates existing special events with peers while maintaining a creative look at new possibilities
- Maintains and updates vendor master list, sponsorship guides, and community key contact list
- Develops and executes nature/environmental programs (Keep Watauga Beautiful)
- Oversees Yard of the Month program
- Sorts, files, and stores documents, contracts, and correspondence
- Performs administrative duties to include weekly vendor payables and others as assigned
When assigned to the Senior Center:
- Supervises, schedules, and implements senior adult classes, activities, programs, and events
- Supervises PT Recreation Attendant assigned to Senior Center
- Assists in the design and structure of an effective, comprehensive senior adult recreation, education, and service program
- Communicates verbally and in writing regularly with senior adult participants, citizens, the general public, and other agencies
- Maintains senior adult files, records, and reports to include reimbursement reports as required
- Maintains equipment and supplies for senior adult recreation
- Coordinates entertainment activities, including dances, concerts, bingo, etc.
