EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Patron Relations Specialist -Full Time

The Waukesha Public Library seeks an outgoing and engaging fulltime Patron Relations Specialist who will provide dedicated safety and security services for our patrons and staff and assist in behavior correction, conflict resolution, and customer service.

The Library is seeking a candidate whose talents, knowledge and customer service skills can take our services to the next level. We would love to hear from candidates who embrace change while focusing on evolving community needs.

The 2024 starting salary is $21.88 per hour.
Schedule is full-time, 40 hours per week and includes required weekdays, evening, and weekend hours.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The individual in this position:

  • Provides security for all areas of the Waukesha Public library including the building parking lots, and grounds to maintain a safe and inviting atmospheres for all patrons and staff and enforces all facility rules, policies and procedures.
  • Assists in crisis situations and emergencies and investigates and handles disturbances including contacting law enforcement and emergency personnel when necessary.
  • Educates library users on appropriate behaviors and enforces the Library's Code of Conduct.
  • Observes, identifies and reports security and/or safety conditions and concerns and removes patrons who are in violation of the Library Code of Conduct.
  • Recommends procedures and methods to prevent security issues.
  • Works with Library staff to monitor, recognize and resolve security problems and to keep the Public Services Manager informed of activities and/or problems.
  • Obtains and maintains necessary documentation, records and reports, incidents, and events.
  • Coordinates security and property-related programs such as handling of lost and found materials, staff training, building access control, and surveillance activities.
  • When assigned, serves as the liaison between Library staff, police agencies, social service organizations, personnel, contracted security personnel and the public.
  • Exercises excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills even under difficult or stressful circumstances; can communicate clearly, persuasively, and diplomatically with Library staff and the public while enforcing security rules, often under stressful situations; resolves conflicts, elicits cooperation, and negotiate solutions without resorting to unneeded conflict and removes patrons who are in violation of the Library Code of Conduct.
  • Has knowledge of accepted practices relating to security operations, particularly those that relate to public facilities.
  • Possesses excellent observation skills and has an ability to remain alert and attentive, anticipate potential disruptive behavior and safety or security threats and take preventative action.
  • Capable of communicating in writing and preparing clear, detailed and accurately written reports, logs and other documentation.
  • Possesses the skill to perform the physical activities inherent in security patrol duties, such as walking, running, standing, rapidly ascending and descending stairs and lifting a fully grown adult in emergency situations for the duration of a typical shift.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and major coursework in library sciences, education, or other related field and at least 1-3 years of related experience, with some public library experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability, and skills:

  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, multitasking and prioritizing workload.
  • Ability to analyze problems, troubleshoot and implement solutions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
