Director of Facilities and Operations

Position Title: Director of Facilities and Operations

FLSA Status: Salaried, Exempt

Responsible To: Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent

Supervises: Maintenance Staff / Custodial Staff

Evaluated By: Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent

Evaluation Period:

  • Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per Corporation procedures.
  • Annual evaluation prior to August 1.


Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A degree in a related field from accredited college or university with major course work in areas related to assignment, Bachelor degree preferred.
  • Minimum five-year prior work experience in operations, maintenance and supervision preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of maintenance methods, operations and procedures.
  • Possess valid Indiana driver’s license and be insurable under school corporation’s policies.
  • Proficient use of language and grammar.
  • Demonstrated experience with using technology including various software programs such as Microsoft office suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision but thrive in a dynamic and demanding setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work tasks.


Essential Functions:

  • Develops and implements a management by objectives system for the operation of the physical plant which includes building maintenance, grounds, utilities, custodial services, vehicle fleet management and basic architectural/engineering.
  • Develops methods and timetables for work tasks and goals.
  • Directs activities of physical plant personnel.
  • Maintains control of supplies to support operational department.
  • Prepares operating budget and monitors expenditures.
  • Assists Custodial Supervisor to ensure efficient and effective management of their department.
  • Coordinates and prepares all state and local physical plant inspections with appropriate personnel, advises and rectifies reports regarding health concerns or unsafe practices.
  • Develops and implements a preventative maintenance system for the physical plant.
  • Directs and supervises plans, specifications and costs for all small- and large-scale construction projects.
  • Administrates all engineer documentation necessary to maintain warranty information and operation manuals.
  • Certifies final acceptance inspections on all maintenance contracts to ensure technical sufficiency.
  • Attends requisite local and state professional meetings.
  • The employee shall remain free of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
  • Schedule, supervise and coordinate the work of others.
  • Handle public relations.
  • Assist in estimating, planning and allocation of relevant budget funds.
  • Provide presentations and updates to the Board of School Trustees as requested by Superintendent.
  • Communicate with others in a professional and effective manner.
  • Performs and maintains necessary certifications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Non-Essential Functions:

Performs other duties as assigned by Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent

Equipment Used: Computer, copier, and other office and maintenance equipment


Place Where Work is Performed:
This work is performed on the employer’s premises


Working Conditions:

This work is performed on the employer’s premises. Work is somewhat sedentary in an office setting with minimal hazard/exposure. At times, lifting of less than 50 pounds will be required. Ability to use various software programs including Microsoft office suites.
