The Research and Innovation Department is seeking a
Temporary Operations Specialist. Within a team of engineer’s this position researches improvements in the operations of the District’s programs including the four wastewater treatment facilities, conveyance infrastructure, stormwater management and watershed restoration. Conducts research projects to optimize program operations, develop new innovative technologies, verify operational data for purchase or design of new technologies, or reduce risk of regulatory noncompliance.
- Temporary position, up to 12 months.
- Full-time, up to 40 hours per week.
- The hours worked and duration for this position may qualify for an offer of Healthcare insurance benefits.
- Temporary positions are not eligible for paid holidays or paid vacation time off.

- Interact with District personnel related to testing and correlation of research results with on-going operations.
- Develop testing protocols and experiments based research objective and modify as needed based on interpretation of results.
- Conduct data analysis and statistical interpretations to test research hypotheses.
- Write research reports and present findings at conferences.
- Manage research within required budget and time constraints.
- Drives a District vehicle for work related purposes.
KNOWLEDGE OF: - Basic research methods of data collection and analysis
- Advanced wastewater treatment and industrial pretreatment principles and practices and/or theory and principles of water resource protection
- Laboratory testing and sampling procedures and appropriate research record keeping
SKILL IN:
- Gathering, evaluating, and interpreting data
- Use of computers and computer software for word processing, spreadsheets, and database management
- Technical writing to develop, edit and compose SOPs, technical reports and journal articles
ABILITY TO: - Identify, research, and analyze processes and procedures
- Develop, organize and operate testing of equipment, procedures or processes
- Research and identify equipment or materials needed for testing
- Develop alternatives and recommend strategies to improve reliability and cost-effectiveness of technical processes
- Establish and maintain high quality service and effective working relationships with District employees, representatives of outside agencies and members or the public by providing accurate, complete and up-to-date information in a courteous, efficient and timely manner
- Operate effectively in a team environment
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Learn appropriate computer applications related to the research being conducted
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledges, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the KSAs would be: 2 years' experience in conducting research related to environmental engineering or sciences.
College-level coursework in, chemistry, biology, microbiology, quantitative analysis, laboratory methodologies, hydrology, environmental science, ecology, or related fields.
In addition to the Experience and Training Guidelines listed above, some positions may prefer:Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science (or a related field) or engineering with an emphasis on chemistry, biology, or microbiology.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTSUpon selection, candidates must possess and maintain a valid State issued driver’s license.
