Department: Magistrate Salary: $65,083.00-$77,100.00

POSITION SUMMARY
Magistrates are attorneys at law admitted to practice in Ohio. By order of reference from the judges of Cleveland Municipal Court, magistrates are assigned to hear civil, criminal and traffic matters and issue magistrate decisions, pursuant to Civil Rule 53, Criminal Rule 19, and Traffic Rule 14, subject to approval by the judges.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Magistrates are required to perform legal research and preside over the following dockets and issue decisions based on the facts presented and the applicable law:
- Small Claims
- Traffic Arraignment
- Misdemeanor Arraignment
- Pre- and Post-Judgment Motions
- Bond Forfeiture Hearings
- Garnishment Hearings
- Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles Appeals and Petitions for Limited Driving Privileges
- Parking Violation Bureau Appeals
- Municipal Income Tax Arraignments
- Cognovit Notes
- Default Judgments
- Civil and Criminal Motions, Pre-trials and Trials
- Provide quality service that continuously improves, that meets or exceeds public expectations, and ensures all are treated with courtesy, dignity, and respect.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Attorney and member of the Ohio Bar in good standing; five (5) years legal experience, with two (2) years trial experience or the equivalent thereof; basic mediation skills or the equivalent thereof; working knowledge of Ohio Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure, Ohio Traffic Rules, Ohio Rules of Evidence and Cleveland Municipal Court Rules of Practice and Procedure.

COURT EXPECTATIONS of EMPLOYEE
In accomplishing the responsibilities of this position, the Court expects that the employee will adhere to the mission and values of the Court as well as all Court policies and procedures. In addition, while carrying out the duties of this position, the employee is expected to model high ethical conduct on and off the job, and exhibit a professional and respectful demeanor with all Court employees.
Qualified applicants may be required to submit to testing and provide writing samples. Proof of education and employment references will be required before final interview. Employment predicated upon successful completion of criminal record check, drug testing and 180-day probationary period.
