Coastal Pacific Food Distributors (CPFD) has an opening for an Industrial Athletic Trainer/ Safety Specialist.  The position plans, coordinates and oversees all components of the Company’s worksite injury management and health improvement program for employees in three facilities, including but not limited to, strategic planning, development and maintenance of metrics, reporting, ergonomic reviews, labor efficiency and wellness initiatives. Reviews, develops, and implements policies to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Leads the effort to manage and reduce worker’s compensation claims.  Regularly checks facility for safety compliance and drives plans to improve.

 Roles & Responsibilities:

  •  Responsible for developing and implementing injury prevention and reduction programs, along with return-to-work and modified duty programs. Administers treatment and care in accordance with credentialed expertise.
  • Inspects the facility to identify safety and health potential injury risks, documents inspection results and makes recommendations
  • Works in conjunction with existing warehouse training personnel and Distribution Services team to develop routines and training of warehouse personnel that use powered industrial truck equipment. Reviews the safe movement practices of Associates.  
  • Develops health and safety procedures for all areas of the company, including the revision of IIPP documents, Job Safety Analysis reports, Job Descriptions, and other documents needed to define work and safe practices.
  • Facilitates safety committee meetings and existing programs, prepares and schedules training to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety, and other relevant topics.
  • Establishes return to work programs to accommodate modified duty assignments and liaisons with medical providers and on-site medical services to provide care and treatment
  • Monitors compliance with safety procedures and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Manages workers compensation claims by following up with claims representatives on reserve costs, reserve charges, claims strategy and issues monthly report on expense variations and action plans.
  • Assists the HR Manager & Operations Director with on-site CAL-OSHA visits, gathering of necessary information and preparation of responses to CAL-OSHA along with corrective action implementations.
  • Completes injury and illness reports required by government and insurance agencies (like the OSHA 300 logs) and internal reports on accident frequencies, costs and lost time.
  • Works alongside HR Manager and Operations Directors to review and discuss our safety programs with our insurance carriers and their Loss Control Specialists who make on-site visits, report and audit requests and injury prevention recommendations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy, or related field required, master’s degree desirable.
  • Certifications and coursework in musculoskeletal specialty and education in evaluating movement and determining injury potential to prevent injury
  • BCSP (Board of Certified safety Professionals) Associate Safety Professional (ASP) credential would be a plus

Experience:  

  • Five years of experience in a capacity that requires fitness training or instruction, physical therapy, fitness program management or business program management related to injury prevention and safety.

Knowledge:  

  • Knowledge of kinesiology, physical therapy techniques, sports medicine and training programs, physiology and nutrition

 Skills and Abilities

  • Prolonged periods of time walking or traveling on powered industrial truck equipment to evaluate worker movements on-site and to work side-by-side with the industrial athletes.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills.
  • Proficient in technology and equipment used in industrial warehouse and logistics environments.
  • Certifications, or willingness to become certified, in powered industrial truck usage
  • Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word to write documents, generate reports and prepare presentations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at a time to demonstrate work practices.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative to research and develop programs and policies
  • Ability to use existing knowledge of basic injury prevention programs and develop enhanced programs that conform with warehouse incentive programs to promote labor efficiency and safe work practices
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel, as necessary, to Ontario and Fife distribution centers to deploy programs and best practices
