Job Description
Provides comprehensive and strategic management and guidance in the income tax function, including GAAP income tax reporting, SEC reporting requirements, internal audit controls and external regulatory reporting. Works to address all aspects of CoBank's tax department's internal and external income tax deliverables, including process control and development, reporting, planning, and federal, state and local income taxes. Manages collaborative projects and interactions with internal and external stakeholders. Provides subject matter expertise supporting transactions, processes and investments.
Essential Functions
- Manages the review and preparation of the interim period and annual ASC 740 income tax provision calculation. Coordinates with Financial Reporting to ensure the interim, annual and regulatory financial statements include accurate and complete information and disclosures. Works with external auditors and regulators to ensure all tax-related processes, calculations and disclosures do not result in findings of deficiency or material weakness.
- Manages the preparation and review of all federal and state income and gross receipts tax returns, including quarterly estimates and extension payments. Ensures the accuracy and completeness of supporting work papers and base information used in the compliance process. Provides analysis and documentation of filing and specific tax positions within various jurisdictions.
- Coordinates R&D tax credit studies and assists in analysis of investment tax credit calculations, due diligence and documentation.
- Leads federal and state income or gross receipt audits. Responds to IRS and state agency audits, inquiries and tax notices, resolves tax disputes efficiently
- Prepares and reviews income tax planning projections. Implements tax planning strategies to support Company’s financial goals. Coordinates with third parties on income tax credit transfers.
- Recommends, implements and supports process improvement activities and initiatives to maximize accuracy and efficiency, and to align with new business initiatives, changes in tax law or tax planning positions.
- Researches complicated tax matters, and stays up-to-date on changes in tax laws, especially laws related to cooperative taxation and leasing. Informs and educates financial management of changes in tax laws affecting CoBank and its subsidiaries.
- Develops inter-department relationships, and interfaces with personnel to ensure that tax information provided by other departments is delivered accurately and efficiently. Instructs and assists staff in developing relationships and interacting with inter-department personnel.
- Assists management with providing professional counsel and technical expertise in the formulation and application of tax policies. Makes recommendations on strategies, policy, and departmental practices.
- Supervises staff. Mentors, trains, sets performance standards, manages workflow, grants authorities, evaluates performance, and recommends personnel actions within delegated authorities. Consults with Human Resources as appropriate. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with CoBank policies and applicable laws.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline. required
Work Experience
- 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in a Big 4 public accounting firm or a large corporate tax department required
- 3 years supervisory/management experience required

The typical base pay range for this role is between $140,052 - $194,742. Compensation may vary based on individual job-related knowledge, skills, expertise, and experience. This position is eligible for a discretionary annual incentive program driven by organization and individual performance.
