What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker III (DOT Road Maintenance) position at Cobb County Government?

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled work associated with the construction, maintenance, and upkeep of County streets and roads, rights-of-way, water distribution and collection systems, stormwater and drainage systems, public facilities and property, and other infrastructure as part of a public works and utilities crew. 

These positions are assigned to the Cobb County Department of Transportation and will fill vacancies in multiple divisions at multiple locations across the County.

The Cobb County Department of Transportation (DOT) develops, manages, and operates Cobb County's transportation system. This system includes a vast network of roadways, sidewalks, and trails; a transit system that provides public transportation; and an airport that serves business and recreational flying needs.

The activities and functions of Cobb DOT can be divided into six primary service areas:

  • Aviation services (Cobb County International Airport)
  • Transit services (CobbLinc)
  • Comprehensive transportation planning
  • Project services
  • Road maintenance
  • Traffic operations

Cobb DOT also assists with the implementation of several programs that are funded by participants within established districts, including the Street Light District Program, Pedestrian Lighting District Program, and Sidewalk District Program.

Tuition assistance is available for you while you complete a college degree or certification. Reimbursable amounts are dependent upon available funding and will be proportionately distributed to all pre-approved applicants on a quarterly basis.  
 

Performs manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and upkeep projects: lifts, moves, loads, and unloads materials, equipment, tools, furniture, and supplies; digs ditches, trenches, and holes manually or utilizing power equipment; shovels, rakes, spreads, compacts, and levels dirt, rock, asphalt, cement, and other materials; retrieves supplies, materials, tools, equipment and other items and runs various errands as needed; collects and transports materials, supplies, tools, and equipment to and from the worksite; and removes litter, debris, and deceased animals from roadways and other County property.

Follows established safety procedures: utilizes safety equipment and wears protective gear; monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; monitors traffic conditions surrounding trucks and equipment to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project and work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.

Performs various manual tasks in support of street, roadway, and drainage projects: installs and removes sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and culverts; clears and repairs ditches; clears drainage obstructions from culverts, ditches, and gutters; lays and smoothes asphalt; repairs asphalt and concrete; patches and repairs potholes in road surfaces; compacts road surfaces and packs ground materials; installs and repairs pipe; and installs reflective markers in streets.

Performs manual work functions associated with construction and maintenance projects for water, sewer and stormwater drainage systems: installs and repairs pipe (laying and cutting pipes); cuts and repairs sewer taps; builds and repairs manholes, catch basins, valve boxes, etc.; replaces grit screens; constructs, repairs, and clears ditches; clears drainage obstructions; breaks up pipes and concrete; assists equipment operators with site preparation and operation of jet-vac equipment; replaces water meters, meter boxes, lids, or other components; mixes cement; and performs related labor.

Performs various tasks involving grounds maintenance or roadside maintenance projects: mows grass; edges buildings, roadways, landscaped areas, driveways, and sidewalks; plants and maintains trees, shrubs, and flowers; waters landscaped areas; cuts down trees; prunes tree limbs, hedges, and shrubs; picks up and disposes of tree limbs, brush, and other materials from grounds or right-of-way areas; mulches leaves; spreads pine straw, mulch, sand, gravel, or other grounds materials; lays sod or spreads grass seed; applies fertilizer, pesticide, and herbicide; applies salt and sand during icy weather; rakes ground materials; blows leaves and debris from walkways or grounds; picks up and disposes of debris and litter from ground areas; empties trash containers; digs holes and trenches and shovels materials.

Performs various tasks involving building maintenance projects: cleans buildings, restrooms, or other facilities; mops, sweeps, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces; troubleshoots plumbing problems and clears stopped drains; troubleshoots basic electrical problems; replaces batteries, light bulbs, and ballasts; paints interior and exterior surfaces and equipment; repairs roofing; installs tile flooring; performs concrete and asphalt work; pressure-washes building surfaces and concrete areas.

Assists in setting up special events and activities; installs, erects, or hangs holiday decorations; assists with traffic control during event; assists with cleanup after events.

Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may include a service truck, pump, probing rod, tamper, jack hammer, lawn mower, riding mower, edger, weedeater, chipper and mulcher, leaf blower, sod cutter, spreader, tiller, chain saw, power saw, hand saw, concrete saw, air compressor, pickaxe, sledgehammer, rake, posthole digger, shovel, hand tools, measuring instruments, or two-way radio.

Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking and replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, performing minor equipment repairs, greasing equipment, sharpening blades, replacing parts, washing and cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop or work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

Gathers equipment, tools, parts, and supplies needed to conduct work activities: ensures availability of adequate parts and materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials as required.

Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, checklists, work orders, service tickets, vehicle and equipment maintenance records, or other documents.

Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, service tickets, and reports, schedules, diagrams, equipment operational guides, chemical labels, street maps, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

Communicates with supervisor, other departments, employees, customers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Provides coverage during special events and activities as needed; responds to emergency and disaster situations as needed; provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed; and performs other related duties as required

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by two years of experience involving construction and maintenance work preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License; Depending on area of assignment, must obtain and maintain Flagging Certification within the timeframes established by the department. 

Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
