Under general supervision performs highly skilled technical duties associated with transportation asset inspection efforts in support of Public Works operations and transportation infrastructure management; performs related work as assigned. (Illustrative Only)

  • Leads and performs inspection, documentation and management of the Public Works physical transportation assets including box culverts, pipe culverts, cattle guards, fence, guardrail, signs, etc
  • Evaluates and documents structural/physical condition of each transportation asset to support transportation inventory asset program
  • Manages and maintain the Lucity Asset Management database for accurate documentation of the location and the condition of all transportation assets
  • Coordinates with Road Maintenance and Engineering divisions to prioritize program repairs of transportation assets
  • Initiates and manages a program for replacement and repair of critical transportation assets based on available budget
  • Participates in training to stay current with principles and practices required for inspection of transportation assets
  • Ensures continuity of inspection ratings through time
  • Leads and trains other staff that are temporarily assigned to inspection efforts.
  • Leads or participates in other Public Works operations and road maintenance activities as needed
Essential functions of this position include: driving; working with and around others, staff, employees and the public; interruptions, telephones, 2 way radios and questions from staff; repetitive motion (hand/wrist) computer, telephone, tools & equipment; vision (near & far; color vision; hearing and speech for ordinary communication with employees and in meetings.    High school diploma or GED and  5 years’ experience in asset or transportation construction inspection, transportation asset maintenance, highway maintenance or transportation construction work; OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

 
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain an Arizona driver’s license by date of hire and maintain throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with GIS or asset management software, GPS data collection. inspection of transportation projects/assets, and civil engineering standards related to transportation and be proficient with computers.

The ideal candidate should possess technical expertise in engineering standards, highway construction and asset management, with a focus on inspection and documentation of transportation assets. Responsibilities include leading inspections, evaluating asset conditions, managing databases, and coordinating repairs within budget constraints. The candidate should demonstrate proficiency in computer and mobile device operation, along with effective communication skills and the ability to work independently. A bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or related field is preferred, along with previous experience in transportation asset inspection or a similar field. Considerable knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices, and technical aspects of civil engineering standards as applied to transportation and public works infrastructure
  • Technical aptitude including the operation of computers, mobile devices, and databases
  • Basic knowledge of Asset Management and GIS
  • Data creation/collection methods including GPS and computer applications
  • Completion of technical training/certifications in areas as needed such as guardrail, cattle guards, signs, culverts, etc.
  • Principles and practices of transportation maintenance and construction
  • Principles and practices of Work Zone Safety and Traffic Control
 
 
Working knowledge of:
  • Local, regional, and state engineering standards and specifications and the relationship to transportation assets
  • Computers and mobile devices
  • Asset management and GIS software applications, Microsoft Office software
  • Basic GPS functions
  • Basic knowledge of work zones
 
Ability to:
  • Understand basic design standards for public work infrastructure
  • Read and interpret Engineering Design and Construction Manual, MUTCD and other engineering regulatory documents
  • Inspect and evaluate condition of transportation assets and make recommendations for repair or replacement
  • Understand budgets and prioritize a replacement program to address critical needs
  • Operate computers, GPS and mobile devices
  • Use tools, materials, and equipment associated with transportation asset inspection and maintenance
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, other County employees, and the public
  • Prioritize and organize a variety of responsibilities
  • Follow written and oral instruction and completing tasks in a timely manner
  • Work independently with little supervision
