The Automation Engineering Instructor provides technical and subject area expertise in their respective program. The successful candidate will work as part of a team to instruct and train students in skills related to manufacturing careers, including machine maintenance, electronics and motor controls, ac/dc circuits, intro to PLC’s, lean manufacturing, diagnostics and troubleshooting, robotics, HMIs, industrial communication, integrated process controls, applied automation, and process control theories.


Work also includes program planning; purchasing and budgeting; program scheduling; student recruitment; curriculum development; and program review. The position involves analyzing community and industry needs and providing technical assistance to local industries. The instructor coordinates work with other instructional and college personnel, including reporting, enrollment management, and other activities. The position requires qualification for an Idaho Career-Technical Postsecondary teaching credential.


The successful candidate will work with the Program Manager to facilitate the learning process by designing and implementing appropriate, meaningful and equitable instructional activities, while evaluating student learning by creating and applying well-designed assessment tools. This will be accomplished through curriculum development, program review, mentoring of students, and in collaboration with community and industry for successful placement into the workforce.


The successful candidate will assist students to connect with academic and non-academic support services as needed; engage in institutional service, professional development, and other duties assigned by the Department Chair and Dean.


Teaching responsibilities may include day, evening, online, or hybrid, and is subject to change as needed. Responsibilities of a full-time faculty member include, but not limited to 37.5 hours per work week as outlined in the CSI Faculty Handbook; including maintaining a minimum of 5 office hours per week (1 hour/day); and demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and other of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.


Timeline: For best consideration, applicants should submit all supporting materials by June 15, 2024. The successful candidate will begin employment no later than August 1, 2024.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach a full semester credit load of courses in accordance with the descriptions published in the CSI catalog, or as defined by the Program Manager or Department Chair. This may include topics such as Machine Maintenance, Machine Operator, Electronics and Motor Controls, AC/DC Circuits, Intro to PLC’s, Lean Manufacturing, Robotics, Industrial Communication, and Integrated Process Controls.
  • Teach classes in various modalities including, hybrid, online and face-to-face, and zoom-assisted synchronous.
  • Maintain course content in the Learning Management System, Canvas.
  • Participate in faculty development goals to improve professional effectiveness including instructional evaluation processes, the "online Teacher" certification training, the "New Teacher" effective teaching workshop, and other professional development opportunities to include a three-year onboarding process.
  • Complete First Camp! training or the equivalent university coursework as required by the Idaho Division of Career and Technical Education Division to obtain teaching credentials.
  • Design and help implement curriculum that is relevant to current practices in the industry.
  • Coordinate with others who are teaching within the program to ensure program-level objectives are being met.
  • Continuously review and update curriculum and instructional technology with the Program Manager.
  • Collaborate annually with those in the department to complete program review.
  • Implement course-level and program-level outcomes assessment strategies.
  • Monitor student progress and retention.
  • Develop an annual plan for personal development.
  • Assist with an annual plan for the unit (program) development and budget.
  • Participate in the biannual, industry-specific advisory committee.
  • Develop and cultivate positive relationships with local industry.
  • Engage in activities to stay current in the discipline, including those that meet the requirements for the State of Idaho Teaching credential renewal.
  • Maintain all industry certifications or licensure.
  • Participate in activities or organizations to promote professional development including those available on campus or through discipline-specific training.
  • Participate in campus committees, faculty senate, and department meetings and activities.
  • Participate in all graduation exercises.
  • Report all technical issues with lab equipment to IT.
  • Complete all administrative duties including, but not limited to, entering attendance, drop for no show, summary of student evaluations at the end of each semester, uploading syllabi to the central repository, etc., and following campus-wide or department-level policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Industry experience acquired by full-time, successful employment in the applicable field OR applicable education in a related field.
  • Ability to obtain State of Idaho CTE Teaching certification. Teacher credentialing requirements include a combination of work experience and education accumulating a minimum of 8 years recent, full-time employment/education (see https://cte.idaho.gov/educators-5/become-a-cte-educator/).
  • Ability to adapt to variety of teaching methodologies including lectures, group activities, individual instruction, distance learning, and teaching with technology.
  • Proficiency in usage of internet, email, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching at a community college or with adult learners preferred.
  • Experience using instructional technology to deliver courses online preferred.

Working Conditions:

This position requires regular travel to Burley and Jerome and will require a flexible, changing teaching schedule, with both daytime and evening courses taught until 9pm.


Must be able to travel to professional development events, for recruitment purposes, for field trips, and to visit cooperative training sites. Successful applicant will work directly with program students in classroom, laboratory, and supervised work experience environments.
