What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manager, Product Design and Definition position at Collins Aerospace?
The Mechanical Power Conversion (MPC) business of Collins Aerospace is currently seeking a section manager for our Product Design and Definition (PDD) group. This is a people leader position for a small team of 6-10 people, where the prime responsibility is to support our diversly talented PDD team in the design and definition of our Mechanical Power Conversion products. The successful candidate will lead a team of Collins staff and contract resources to meet program commitments, both schedule and budget, as well guiding the staff and our department to continuously improve our people, our processes and our products. Based on a recent organizational change in PDD, this matrix position is focused on planning, execution, and people management, as well as partnering with Technical Advisors in the group to drive technical quality, performance, and optimization. Our PDD department is responsible for design, analysis and detailing of highly engineered mechanical equipment. Members of our team implement the engineering design in a 3D model, analyze the tolerance stack up for correct fits and provide detailed drawings for the manufacture of our products. These functions are foundational to successful execution of the many development programs supporting the various product lines of the Mechanical Power Conversion business.
Primary Responsibilities:

Team Leadership
- Manage personnel with responsibility to optimize employee performance and job satisfaction
- Direct management of Collins employees and coordination of supporting contract resources
- Lead regular group meetings with staff to ensure timely flow of company communications
- Conduct personnel performance assessments and provide guidance for career development
- Address day-to-day employee productivity issues and long-term process improvements
Planning and Execution
- Align staffing and resources to program plans for successful project execution
- Own the execution and oversight of PDD program commitments (budget, schedule, technical)
- Assign tasking for employees and coordinate project tracking
- Interface to internal engineering customers and the PDD project group for resource and work package planning
- Respond to requests for proposals with estimates and resourcing to win new business
Process Champion
- Identify and implement process and productivity improvements for improved turn times
- Work with PDD technical advisors to establish and maintain department procedures to comply with applicable standards and policies
- Ensure proper execution of process standard work in developing a safe and reliable product
- Develop and implement strategies for long-term department health
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of prior relevant experience OR
- Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years experience OR
- In absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required
- Engineering/Other Technical Positions: Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a leadership role, especially in a CAD, engineering, or manufacturing environment, will be considered beneficial.
- Knowledge of industry standards and a good understanding of drafting principles such as GD&T are a plus for the candidate in this role.
- Experience with the Siemens NX and Teamcenter suite of tools and Microsoft Office for daily operations.
