About the Work Unit

This position works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Boulder Residency.  The work unit exists to perform all transportation planning, design and construction project engineering and administrative duties in collaboration with other DOT work units, other State and Federal agencies, consultants, utilities, other government entities, and property owners.   Additionally, this work unit assures that the construction of complex projects is performed in a safe manner; is of the highest quality at the lowest possible cost; and is completed in a timely manner with the least inconvenience to the traveling public and in conformance with all contractual and regulatory requirements.


About the Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a vacancy for an Engineer-in-Training I in our Boulder location.  Under the supervision and guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer, the position applies and implements engineering theories, principles, and standards to design and construction of highway and other transportation related projects. The position will carry out established work processes and operations pertaining to design plans and construction inspection/oversight and learn to take on progressively more complex assignments requiring independent engineering judgment.

This position will provide candidates the opportunity for advancement.

 

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Learn to apply current engineering principles, theories, design specifications, applicable design standards and engineering expertise to develop safe, efficient, and economical designs; utilize appropriate engineering software to develop project plans.
  • Assist with the evaluation of survey information, culvert reports, traffic studies, site conditions, and environmental constraints. 
  • Calculate quantities by material pay item and use the quantities to estimate the construction working days. 
  • Learn to include appropriate Standard and Special Project Specifications for inclusion in the plan, specification and estimate (PS&E) submittal and ensure plan quality checks to avoid/limit errors in terms of both design standards and human factors.
  • Learn to manage multiple projects and work with several different local government agencies at the same time, interacting with Local Agencies and other non-CDOT Organizations as they develop projects on the state highways system.  
  • Coordinate with CDOT specialty units and internal departments to make sure the design and construction of projects meet State and Federal standards.
  • Assist with the inspection and certification of the contractor’s equipment, materials, methods, workmanship, and products that they are in conformance with the contract plans and specifications.
  • Learn to negotiate time and cost impacts of changes and settlement of claims for additional time and compensation by reviewing the contract and evaluating the change or merit and entitlement of the claim
  • Learn to prepare and maintain design and construction schedules using scheduling software for all projects. 
  • Abide by all safety regulations, policies and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment; attend and complete all required safety training.

Work Environment: 

  • Monday - Friday, with opportunity for a flexible schedule
  • Some opportunity to work from home 1-3 days a week after training
  • Approximately 30% spent in the field, 70% spent in the office 
  • Travel required during work hours to visit the project site, as well as attend meetings and training
  • Required to attend night or public meetings
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Required to work in proximity to heavy traffic, as well as in hot or cold weather conditions
  • Required to work on variable terrain at project sites

 

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or engineering technology.

 

Substitutions: 

  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
  • OR Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors.

Conditions of Employment

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired for Engineer-In-Training positions must also licensure as a professional engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of initial appointment to an EIT position. 
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks. More information in the supplemental information section.

  • A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

  • Familiarity with rules/regulations/manuals such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), CDOT Construction Manual, M&S Standards and Specifications, CDOT Materials Manual, Erosion Control & Stormwater Quality Guide, and the AASHTO Geometric Design of Highways and Streets Guide.

  • Fluency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, Bentley Open-Roads Designer, SAP, Google Suite, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills.

  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability.

  • Excellent reasoning, investigate, analytical, and problem solving ability.

  • Excellent facilitation, presentation, and communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy.

  • Passion for safety.
