STATEMENT OF DUTIES

General Statement Of Duties:
Manages court reporting services and provides professional verbatim reporting and transcribing for court proceedings, hearings and conferences.


Distinguishing Factors:
Employees in this classification have successfully obtained their Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA). This classification is distinguished from other Court Reporters by the responsibility for coordinating and distributing work among court reporters in a district with two or more full time Court Reporters. This position is discretionary within each judicial district. Supervision is received from the Chief Judge or the District Administrator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides coverage of all hearings, proceedings and conferences.
Maintains a list of private contract substitute court reporters and reassigns resident reporters to cover other divisions to ensure coverage.
Monitors all court reporters' backlog and readjusts assignments as needed.
Establishes policies and procedures to ensure reporting consistency.
May order supplies for all district court reporters.
Reports proceedings of court trials, hearings, or conferences by shorthand, stenotype, or other methods where verbatim records are required by law.
Transcribes the proceedings into accurate transcripts for purposes of appeal or by order of the court.
Identifies participants by name to facilitate reporting; reads aloud statements of speakers as requested during proceedings.
Prepares and distributes transcripts and related reports and documents.
Reviews transcriptions for technical accuracy.
Maintains File/S and records of notes and exhibits.
Performs clerical duties related to the court.
Some positions may schedule hearings and proceedings and perform computer case processing related duties.
Attends meetings and training as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS CONT.

Supervisor Responsibilities:
Responsible for one's own work product and may provide guidance, assistance, or mentorship to less knowledgeable or experienced coworkers, volunteers, or interns. This may include scheduling of work, instructing in work methods, and reviewing work products. May provide input into the hiring and discipline/termination processes. Normally has input into performance evaluation process.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education:
Graduation from an accredited school of reporting or associate degree in reporting and two years of experience in verbatim shorthand reporting and transcribing. Employees in this class must have obtained their Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA). All certified court reporters must maintain their RPR certification by completing three continuing education units (CEUs) every three years and maintaining certification status with NCRA. Employees in this class must maintain such certification throughout their employment with the Colorado Judicial Department.

Physical Demands:
The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers; stoop, or kneel; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries. Regularly requires transcription duties outside working hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
