Position Requirements:

· Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

· Current registration as a licensed professional nurse in New York State

· Bachelors’ Degree required; Masters Degree preferred

· Certification in either nursing leadership or clinical specialty preferred

Experience:

· Demonstrated 3 years progressive leadership ability

· Clinical knowledge in area of responsibility preferred

Position Summary:

The Inpatient Director of Nursing maintains 24-hour accountability for leading and managing all inpatient nursing units (ICU, Memorial 2, 4, and 6) as well as nursing float pool (House Coverage), nursing supervision, and staffing office. As Director of Nursing, you will be accountable for ensuring an outstanding experience for patients and employees for continuously improving the quality of patient care, creating a healthy workplace for staff, and overseeing clinical and administrative functions. While the range of duties and responsibilities is broad and varied, the position’s major responsibility is directing the day-to-day operations, budgeting, financial management, and human resource management. As well as implementing and monitoring quality and process improvement initiatives. Success in this role will be achieved through visionary leadership, knowledge of present and future trends, strategic benchmarking, and innovative interventions.

Job Role and Responsibilities

· Fosters a safe patient environment. Establishes a culture of caring by promoting decisions that are patient centered. Applies national best practices and uses evidence-based practice to build a culture of excellence in patient care.

· Promotes interdisciplinary partnership and consultation of hospital staff

and health care team through participation in committees and related activities to ensure appropriate care and services for patients and families.

· Supervises all nursing activities related to patient care and follows standards for accurate reporting of patients’ symptoms, reactions, and progress. Responsible for the direction and evaluation of patient care delivery.

· Ensures that nurses practice in accordance with established Clinical Standards of Performance as defined by CMH, professional and regulatory organizations. Evaluates patient care through assessment, planning, interventions, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation, and comparison to establish standards. Uses the nursing process that meets the clinical, psychological, and spiritual needs of the patient, family, and staff

· Provides input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures for the nursing department and the organization through the support of shared governance.

· Collaborates with medical staff to monitor patient outcomes.

· Responsible for safety and comfort of patients; and the health and safety of employees assigned to the patient care unit.

· Collaborates with ancillary support services to provide a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.

· Monitors utilization of equipment and supplies. Actively seeks opportunities to improve financial outcomes, engaging staff in the process.

· Demonstrates sound fiscal responsibility in the development and management of the department budget and holds staff accountable for the efficient use of resources including but not limited to managing flexible staffing patterns to meet patient care needs. Monitors and analyzes financial data and utilizes for decisions regarding FTE’s, staffing and operational budget.

· Sets high standards of performance for self and others by imposing standards of excellence and development of inquiry skills that are innovative, optimistic, and supportive of professional growth. Develops a best practice climate for the growth and development of students as well as new nurses.

· Provides professional growth and development of nursing staff through identification of needs, encouraging education, and evaluation of same. Creates developmental paths and plans for staff to increase the expertise. Initiates innovation in staff development, clinical orientation, continuing education, and supports specialty certification.

· Assists with planning, implementing, and verifying that all direct care providers and direct care staff have the required knowledge and skills/attitude-based competencies assessed to address gaps and verified. Provides assistance in the orientation to and practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.

· Completes regular performance evaluations for each staff members; assists with evaluations of new staff prior to the completion of their probationary period

· Plans and maintains staffing patterns for the patient care unit, meeting the patients’ needs for continuity of care and level of care; assures adequate staffing to meet patient needs

· Promotes open communication within the unit, department and with other units and all departments

· Assists with counseling employees, and as appropriate, utilizes the disciplinary process

· Coordinates unit-specific education programs.

· Recruits nursing students through the establishment of exceptional clinical experiences.

· Supports shared governance through a unit-based professional practice council and utilization of staff feedback to make changes to improve care, nursing practice, and /or the work.
