What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ultrasound Radiology Tech position at Columbia University, Department of Radiology?
SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Lead Ultrasound Technologist and the Medical Director; performs all duties associated with acquisition, processing, submission for interpretation and archiving Ultrasound (US) images; responsible for the care of the patient while in the US area. Ensures a culture of excellence by employing the seven competencies for a “Wow experience” and putting them into practice in carrying out job responsibilities. Responsible administratively to the Site Administrator.
REQUIRED TRAINING: HIPAA, OSHA, Infection Control, Annual Training and Radiation/MRI Safety.
RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Reviews imaging requests for appropriateness based on clinical information provided. All questionable orders are communicated to the radiologist for final approval.
2. Positions patient and selects appropriate options to visualize areas of interest based on accepted US technique and the referring physician’s request.
3. Judges diagnostic quality of finished medical images prior to submission to radiologist for interpretation.
4. Performs clerical responsibilities associated with acquisition, processing and archiving of patient records.
5. Offers detailed explanation of diagnostic procedures to patients and answers questions as appropriate.
6. Set up and assist in sonographic Core biopsies and FNAs.
7. Observes patient while in the US area for change in status and makes appropriate intervention or contacts primary care givers for instruction.
8. Identifies and corrects problems as appropriate with all critical occurrences reported to the next level of authority.
9. Operates and maintains equipment on a daily basis maintaining logbooks with equipment performance data: schedules PM, performs QA, maintains records required for and participates in inspections.
10. Maintains supplies and a clean work environment.
11. Conforms to all HIPAA, OSHA, Infection Control and safety guidelines.

Position Qualifications/Specifications:
Minimum Requirements: RDMS certified; 2-3 year’s prior experience; Prior experience with Pediatrics and MSK required.

Special Training/Skills Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations. Must display courtesy and empathy toward patients, co-workers and physicians. Must be able to make sound judgments and execute the appropriate actions based on the needs of patients and knowledge of facility policies and procedures. Must have excellent communications skills and maintain confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines.
Physical Demands Must be able to move around freely. Must be able to assist in the lifting of physically compromised patients. Must possess sufficient visual and auditory acuity to perform task related to the patient; sits, stands, bends and walks intermittently throughout the day; must lift patients and supplies..
Working Conditions: Works in a medical facility subject to electrical, chemical, magnetic and radiant hazards; exposure to infectious disease and lifting hazards
