Assistant County Engineer

The Assistant County Engineer prepares plans and specifications for construction projects, supervises administrative operations, prepares correspondence, and performs necessary construction inspections.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties include the following:

• Assists County Engineer.
• Supervises Subdivision Regulations.
• Performs construction inspections related to subdivision development and construction projects.
• Prepares plans, specifications, and contract documents for construction projects.
• Reviews design plans submitted by engineering consultants.
• Manages contractors for construction projects.
• Operates a variety of computer applications pertaining to plan preparation and engineering analysis.
• Attendance is an essential function of the job.

High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.  Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year College or university with a degree in Civil Engineering.  Professional license as a Texas Professional Engineer (PE) is required.   Must have seven (7) years related experience and pass the PE exam.

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.   Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

Thorough knowledge of civil engineering and applications of engineering theory.  Understanding of surveying principles.  Ability to draft engineering plans, compile engineering specifications, and inspect field construction.  Proficient computer operator.  Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to publicly present himself/herself in a professional manner.

REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.   The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
