Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) strives to maintain healthy populations of fish and wildlife across the state. The employees of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife are passionate about the resource they manage. The Information and Education Division of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Resources is currently seeking a Conservation Educator III to work within the Recruitment and Retention Branch (R3) Branch.

Responsibilities and job duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Design, orchestrate, and deliver aquatic education courses statewide, and collaborating with volunteers and strategic partners to enhance the reach and impact of aquatic education initiatives.
  • Planning, teaching, and representing KDFWR at events, including Hunter Education, National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), and other R3 programs. These programs will consist of: Hook and Cook, Fishing 101, Kayak Fishing 101, Loaner Pole Program, Kayak Fishing Giveaway, Teachers Tackle Box, and Backyard Bass.
  • Representing the Branch and Agency in regional and national working groups and meetings, serving as a liaison to foster effective communication and partnerships within the broader community.
  • Conducts research and contributes to the development and refinement of programs based on analyses of past programming outcomes, including success metrics, churn rates, license history, and program surveys. Chairs a dedicated R3 Committee and consistently provides updates to the R3 strategic plan.
  • Submits detailed activity and expenditure reports, manages bill processing, oversees equipment procurement and distribution, and maintains accurate records for the aquatic education program. Collaborates with the Fisheries Division to ensure timely provision of required federal aid documentation, project statements, and performance reports.
  • Supports and collaborates with other divisions on programs as required and approved.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural or physical science, education, recreation, or related field.


EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have three years of experience in conservation education or related field.


Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree in a natural or physical science, education, recreation or a related field will substitute for one year of experience as a conservation educator.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must be 21 years old and possess either a hunting or fishing license issued by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and certification in first aid and CPR. Must also have two of the following certifications: Basic Archery Instructor, Hunter Education Instructor, Bow Hunter Education Instructor, Boating Education Instructor or Project WILD. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an outdoor classroom setting and on outdoor firing ranges. May work in residential camp setting with 200 campers per week.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
