By joining the Division of Water, Water Resources Branch, Dam Safety Section as an Environmental Engineer Assistant I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to to travel the Commonwealth conducting regulatory inspections on dams and administering major capital construction projects through the State Owned Dam Repair Program. The successful applicant will use engineering principals to review existing dams for compliance with state law and proposed designs for upgrades to deficient dams. Geographic Information Systems will be used frequently to support determinations. The incumbent will also coordinate with the Division of Enforcement to conduct enforcement actions against regulated entities. They will assist dam safety engineers in the management of the State Owned Dam Repair Program, including inspections of construction and review of consultant and contractor submittals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs entry level engineering tasks in support of the Dam Safety Program. Assists section engineers in the design and review of engineering plans, makes field observations during dam inspections, and evaluates the dams for compliance with statutes and regulations. Recommends necessary remedial actions at existing dams based on observations.
- Reviews permit applications for dam construction and modification to ensure compliance with statutes and regulations. Conducts permit management activities including field inspections and progress meetings. Recommends acceptance or disapproval of proposed and completed work.
- Maintains documentation and data in the TEMPO database. Creates reports and other technical documents in support of the Dam Safety Program's mission and in accordance with the standard operating procedures, business rules and guidelines as defined by DEP.
- Develops and maintains Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for dams. Serves as an EAP coordinator for state owned dams.
- Utilizes computer software to accomplish review of engineering problems and design solutions.
- Basic knowledge of accepted civil engineering practices, ability to read and interpret construction drawings and other engineering data
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and electronic communication methods
- Driven, self starter able to work efficiently without close supervision

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering approved by the State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Frequent travel throughout the state may be required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
