Clay Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is one of the most intensively managed Wildlife Management Area’s in the state. They have been tasked as being focal areas for multiple species and programs. Clay WMA is highly utilized by traditional and non- traditional users as it is situated near high population areas. Clay WMA staff are responsible for management on a cluster of WMA's totaling over 12,000 acres. Under the supervision of the WMA foreman, the candidate will be responsible for implementing habitat management on public land in the northeast region.
Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To, The Following
- Works independently at the direction of biologist, engineers, or other professionals.
- Assists biologist, engineers, or other professionals in the conduct of complex research, technical programs, and/or habitat development and identification programs.
- Transports fish and wildlife throughout state, releases them into appropriate habitat.
- Feeds, waters and cares for fish and wildlife while in care of agency.
- Performs maintenance work on equipment and facilities.
- Interacts with public in such activities as monitoring hunters in field and stocking farm ponds.
- Operates heavy and technical equipment at fish hatcheries, wildlife management areas, and at aquatic and terrestrial habitat development sites.
- Collects data concerning fish and wildlife and prepares reports.
- Performs soil and water tests and plants and cultivates agricultural crops to serve as food for wildlife.
- Documents knowledge, skills, and experience with various wildlife habitat management methods as well as implementation of forest management practices and techniques.
- Provides support and input to public land staff and work cohesively with other regional and department staff.
- Assists with specialized regional or divisional projects as needed.
Preferred Skills and Abilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- A working knowledge of farm equipment is needed for this position.
- Experience conducting wildlife management practices or similar.
- Some computer skills will be required, like general knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office.
- Ability to multi-task various job tasks.
- Works great as a team member.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have one year of fishery, wildlife or habitat management/development experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional related training will substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in fisheries, wildlife or habitat management/development will substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Travel, extreme weather conditions, heavy equipment and wildlife may pose hazards.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
