Kentucky State Police is the premier, full-service law enforcement agency in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Primary Role: Forensic Chemists in the Drug Identification section complete chemical analysis of suspected controlled substances in a variety of criminal cases. Sub-discipline areas include Marijuana Identification, Clandestine Laboratory, and General Unknowns.
This position is integral to the prosecution of those involved in the violation of Kentucky and federal controlled substance regulations. This position requires testimony as an expert witness in court.
The Forensic Chemist Training Program lasts approximately six to nine months and includes pertinent reading assignments, practical examinations on known specimens, written examinations, a competency test for each sub- discipline that an analyst works cases, and a mock trial for testimony in each sub-discipline.
Upon successful completion of the training program, the newly trained analyst will generally process casework under the direction of experienced analysts for a set period of time.
Key Responsibilities:

Analyzes powders, pills, liquids, and plant material submitted by law enforcement agencies to determine if controlled substances are present.
- Receives specialized training in the handling, processing, and decontamination of chemical and biological hazards.
- Compiles and reviews laboratory reports regarding analysis of submitted evidence.
- Provides expert testimony throughout the Commonwealth pertaining to analysis and reports.
- Receives and is responsible for the security of evidence.
- Maintains laboratory instrumentation.
- Maintains review of work-related literature and other documents.
- Attends trainings and conferences related to the drug chemistry field.
- Responds to crime scenes and other work-related special details as necessary.
