Description
The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates 13 correctional facilities that house Kentucky's adult inmate population. The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth and to provide a safe, secure and humane environment for staff and offenders in carrying out the mandates of the legislative and judicial processes; and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquire skills, which facilitate non-criminal behavior.
Kentucky State Reformatory (KSR) is hiring for a Safety Specialist to perform beginning professional level work in developing and/or implementing safety programs for the Institution.
Responsibilities may include:
Performs beginning professional level work in the development of safety and fire prevention programs for the institution.
Conducts inspections of institutional structures, areas and equipment on an ongoing base to ensure compliance of all safety, fire health and sanitation regulations, codes, policies and procedures and take corrective measures when necessary.
Interprets information on regulations, policies and procedures dealing with safety and be able to present information to staff as needed.
Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports that document deficiencies found and corrective actions taken.
Reviews and updates all institutional fire and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and make recommendations for changes if necessary.
Updates all manuals as necessary.
Conducts investigations of any accidents that occur on institutional grounds and reports findings to the Warden, making recommendations to alleviate future similar incidences and note any trends that may be occurring.
Develops and conduct training.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two years of experience in safety operations or inspection, incident management, or emergency services.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional administrative, safety operations and/or inspection, incident management, or emergency services experience will substitute for the required college on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
Incumbent must be able to make oral presentations. Travel may be required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
