Job Duties
Virginia Military Institute is accepting applications for an Associate Director of Institutional Research. The Associate Director will report to the Director of Institutional Effectiveness, a position that reports to the Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Dean of the Faculty, and will be a member of the Office of Assessment and Institutional Research.
Key responsibilities include:
• Data Visualizations & Analysis: Researches, gathers, analyzes and summarizes data and other information for data visualization.
• Synthesizes complex issues and presents them in a creative and non-technical manner in both print and online, including data visualizations and dashboards.
• Supports requests, priorities, and procedures for improving data presentation, reporting, special projects, and links with external sources.
• Creates and maintains relational databases necessary for preparing reports for external governmental and accrediting agencies and for VMI departments and officials.
• Coordinates reporting to IPEDS, SCHEV, and SACSCOC. Serves as the IPEDS Keyholder.
• Updates and maintains the office’s website with timely, relevant data and graphics.
• Assists with the SACSCOC compliance efforts.
• Serves on Post-wide committees as appropriate, and participates in activities that enhance and support the Institute’s mission.
• Assists the Director in the analysis and reporting of other institutional data, as needed for planning, evaluation, and assessment.
• Participates in ongoing professional development activities to acquire and maintain knowledge and skills that are essential for performing the duties of the position and for supporting the Office in following best practices in data visualization, assessment and institutional research.
• Employ appropriate technologies for performing the duties of the position at the necessary level of proficiency, including the Institute’s Datatel/Colleague system of institutional data, applications in Microsoft Office (especially SAS, Tableau, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the Institute’s email system (MS Exchange), and Adobe Acrobat. (It is permissible for sufficient proficiency in these skills to develop during the first year of employment.)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree; previous experience creating data visualizations, coordinating statistical reports, and managing website content. Must be able to collaborate effectively with Institute personnel, meet project quality standards and deadlines, and adapt easily to changing priorities.
Additional Considerations
Master’s degree in a relevant discipline; previous employment in higher education conducting educational, organizational, or institutional research (e.g., data entry, reporting to state and federal agencies, compilation and dissemination of fact books); demonstrated interest in broadening and deepening expertise in institutional research, evaluation, and outcomes assessment; proficiency with website management and software languages for writing database queries and routines for use in SAS and Microsoft Excel; and previous experience with Tableau.
