Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:

Overall responsibility for a residence hall of approximately 400 to 1,700 residents. Responsibilities include hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating all undergraduate staff in collaboration with a full-time Administrative Assistant and/or resident Office Assistant. Coordinate the administrative functions of a residence hall community, which include: facility management, maintenance, record keeping, resident employment, and resident conduct. Provide leadership in promoting an atmosphere within the residential community that supports academic achievement and fosters responsible decision-making. Coordinate community and resident development through social and educational programming, community council advising, and the development of living-learning communities (if applicable). Advise individual residents, resident leaders, and resident groups. Participate in an on-call duty rotation for approximately 3,000 residents. Serve on departmental and university-wide committees.

Community Management

•Crisis - Work closely with university staff in crises; respond to emergencies to support residents and housing operations during weather-related or scheduled university closures, campus-wide disruptions, campus-wide health concerns or pandemics, public assemblies, etc.

•On-Call Duty - Serve in rotating on-call coverage for campus with other professional live-on staff and develop a duty schedule with building resident staff to ensure coverage.

•Conduct and Care - Enforce and support all university and departmental policies and regulations; in cooperation with Residential Life and Housing and Resident Conduct and Academic Integrity; assist in the administration of the university’s conduct process for residents living in residence halls by serving as a conduct officer.

•Conflict Resolution - Provide appropriate mediation and referral for individual residents and staff as needed.

•Administration - Maintain proper building records, file annual reports, and meet all area and departmental deadlines.

•Academic Support - Actively implement academic initiatives designed to further facilitate resident success, partnering with Living Learning Communities; bringing campus resources into the residence hall, and working with faculty and academic advising to ensure resident success in residence halls.

•Liaison - Work to build relationships with the building housekeeping supervisor, the area housekeeping staff, facilities/maintenance personnel, information desk staff, mailroom staff, the Central Housing Office, and the VCU Police Department to ensure the physical environment is maintained at an acceptable level.

•Budget - Administer the office supply, programming, community council, and staff development budgets.

•Facilities - Ensure that facilities issues are reported accurately and promptly to the appropriate sources; follow-up to ensure facilities issues have been resolved to the satisfaction of the resident; Co-manage keys with the Administrative Assistant.

•Assignments - Maintain accurate room occupancy data for the hall. Work with the Administrative Services team to navigate room changes/swaps. Participation in the administration of the room/hall selection process.

•Customer Service - Investigate and respond to the concerns of residents, parents, university staff members, and others in a manner that provides accurate information, fosters resident development and maintains good customer service.

Staff Supervision and Development

• Supervision - Motivate and direct building staff of 8-13 Resident Assistants; provide formal evaluations of building staff members; conduct individual meetings to develop and review goals/outcomes achieved, and to provide and solicit feedback; facilitate weekly staff meetings to discuss issues and recognize contributions.

• Instruction and Training - Facilitate Residential Life training(s) and assist in the development of RA area in-services conducted for all staff throughout the year; including emphasis on topics of diversity and social justice, professional development, academic enhancement, leadership, and day-to-day duties of residential staff.

• Programming and Advising - Assist in the implementation of VCU’s residential individual interactions and programming initiatives; ensure that resident staff understand programmatic learning outcomes and successfully reach them via hall programming. Directly advise the Community Council executive board to ensure that hall-wide programming initiatives are successfully implemented.

Resident Development and Involvement

• Community Development - Foster a sense of positive community in the residence hall by using creative and innovative methods to connect to residents personally.

• Visibility - Be available to residents and staff; serve as a positive role model; maintain office hours; attend floor, building, and/or university events.

• Advising - Identify, encourage, and provide leadership opportunities to residents; serve as advisor, mentor, and resource to community councils, resident staff, and individual residents. Provide individual advising meetings for residents with academic, social, interpersonal, and adjustment concerns.

• Education - Ensure that programs are designed to connect residents to their floor, building, and university communities; ensure that learning outcomes for residential individual interactions and programming initiatives are reached in concert with the Assistant Director; work with the Resident Assistants and community councils to develop programs and activities that meet the diverse development needs of residents; advise community council members as they work to accomplish their goals and vision.

Departmental Initiatives

• Assist in implementing various assessment activities and retention initiatives to improve the residential experience and resident success.

• Serve on a variety of department and division-wide work teams, committees, and initiatives as needed to support the mission of the department and the university.

• Work to build relationships with the Central Housing Office, Division of Resident Affairs, and other University constituents to best support residents and staff.

• Represent VCU at professional conferences, on campus, and in the community.

• Work with Opening, Closings, Orientation, Open Houses, Preview Days, Conferences, Admissions, or other assigned areas to successfully integrate residential life initiatives and information sessions throughout the academic year and summer.

• Other duties as assigned.

Typical Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field plus Residence Life experience. This is a 12-month live-in position. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
