Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Fredericksburg District is seeking a skilled and motivated operator/leader to serve as a working Crew Leader at the Richmond County Area Headquarters located in Richmond County, Virginia.
As a Maintenance Crew Leader you will:
• Work closely with supervisors to identify maintenance needs, develop schedules, plan work and resources, and execute work assignments by identifying and assigning manpower, ordering materials, and determining the equipment needed to accomplish the job.
• Provide guidance and training to crew members involved in clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway patching.
• Lead crews daily work and in the setup of work zones, and performing traffic control, focusing on worksite safety.
• Operate equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, rollers, loaders and train crew members on equipment.
• Continuously monitor operations to ensure employee’s safety and work complies to agency standards. Champion safety at all times.
• Maintain records of work performed.
• Serve as a backup supervisor as needed.
• Work during emergencies, with VDOT determining when you would be required to report. You will lead crews during emergencies that block roads such as traffic accidents and storm debris. You will provide traffic control and perform activities necessary to reopen the road. During severe weather, you will prepare for events, lead others, and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12-hours in length, and may include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date within the Northern Neck Residency.

Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals.
• Ability to lead, direct, oversee the work of others and train others.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Basic knowledge of inventory procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and use hand and power tools.
• Skill operating and maintaining light and medium trucks and equipment.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
All employees hired without a valid CDL are required to obtain a CDL within 11 months of their hire date. Employees cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
(FMCSA) regulations requires entry-level drivers (who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade a CDL, or obtain a hazardous materials endorsement) to complete a FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Virginia department of Motor Vehicles can grant a CDL or endorsement. The ELD training course is comprised of 160 hours, on average. VDOT is willing to assist with course enrollment and payment upon acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
