Job Duties
VDOT Bristol District is seeking a motivated individual to be our next Highway Maintenance Supervisor for our Traffic Operations Division. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting system operations by effectively participating in and overseeing the maintenance and installation of pavement markings, pavement messages, roadway signs, and other traffic control devices in accordance with MUTCD and Virginia Supplement.

This position is designated Essential for Emergency Operations - As defined by VDOT Department Memorandum (DM) Number: 17-1 – Emergency Operations and Traffic Management, VDOT is an emergency operation agency. As such, this job is essential to emergency response operations and expected to work in these situations. Report to work when called. Maintain communications with supervisor. Keep abreast of weather forecasts for duty readiness in reporting. Be prepared to operate appropriate equipment in all kinds of weather.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT Medical Card within 11 months of employment and
maintain thereafter.
- Knowledge of sign installation standards and material characteristics.
- Skill in the use of Computers and Software Applications.
- Skill in the installation and maintenance of roadway signs (both metal and wood structures).
- Skill in the operation, maintenance, methods, procedures of specialized pavement marking
equipment and materials.
- Skill in the installation of pavement messages and markings.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of handheld and power tools and light, medium, and
heavy-duty equipment used for district operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers.
- Valid Driver's License.
Additional Considerations
- Experience in pavement marking, stripping, and messaging operations.
- Ability to supervise others and provide technical direction and guidance to skilled, semi-skilled,
and manual laborers.
- Ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials, and equipment
needed to accomplish the job.
- Ability to complete reports and records, requiring business English and Math.
- Flagger's Certification
