Job Duties

This position develops and oversees a culture of sustainability and environmental awareness within the agency. Develops and manages regional recycling centers to process recyclable materials generated in the agency.

Provides guidance and technical assistance to facilities regarding waste management to ensure proper collection, sorting, and diversion of recycling and compostable materials from landfills in working towards a zero-waste profile.

Establishes and supports composting and other food-waste diversion programs at all correctional facilities. Develops and manages all composting permits and ensures regulatory requirements are met. Establishes contracts for recycling services. Provides training to inmates, in conjunction with community partners, in waste management, recycling, and composting to support the agency's reentry initiative. Collects and analyzes waste management data, develops trends, and establishes baseline measures and goals for success. Promotes recycling and zero-waste initiatives to internal and external stakeholders. Ensures pest control program operates in a safe and effective manner with an emphasis on staff training, proper chemical control, and the use of less-lethal methods by supervising the Statewide Pest Control Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

High school Diploma. Valid Driver’s license. Ability to provide own transportation to and from work required.

Knowledge of sustainability and environmental awareness. Experience managing composting permits and other regulatory requirements. Experience establishing and managing contracts for recycling services. Ability to assist facilities with waste management.

Ability to train inmates in waste management and sustainability processes as they pertain to supporting the Agency. Ability to collect and analyze data related to waste management to establish and revise goals. Ability to develop reports, share results and present materials, in multiple formats, to a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders. Ability to manage pest control programs, including training staff, management of chemicals, and supervising the Statewide Pest Control Manager.

Additional Considerations

Advanced knowledge of Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Law, or a related discipline and appropriate training and experience.

Experience working in a correctional setting. Experience supervising others in a professional environmental service role. High-level of experience in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel. Possession of VCA/VCO or the ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe.
