General Information:

James Madison University seeks a part-time Animal Husbandry/Animal Care Technician.

The animal husbandry/animal care technician is responsible for providing husbandry and animal care to laboratory animals (rodents, fish, frogs, birds, snakes, and other animals as needed) in conventional and immunocompromised laboratory areas. Responsibilities include basic sanitation/disinfection and maintenance of mammalian and non-mammalian vivarium facilities and daily record-keeping.

This position requires flexibility to work varying schedules and hours. Employee may be subjected to alternate work schedule, i.e. Monday-Thursday with alternating weekends and holidays.

Applicants cannot have pet rodents at home.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform animal observations; provide care and husbandry services;
  • Maintain breeding colonies of small laboratory animals, including transgenic rodents;
  • Observe, record, and report atypical findings of the environment and animal’s health. Immediately reports such matters to the Vivarium Manager;
  • Handle, restrain, and provide care for all species of laboratory animals; this includes providing clean food, water, and bedding, as well as assistance to investigators in experimental procedures and post-operative care;
  • Maintain animal room records; e.g. census, sanitation, environmental monitoring, water quality, enrichment, feeding, and cage card animal identification;
  • Receive animals (e.g., general health observation, sexing and identification);
  • Maintain adequate and appropriate levels of feed, supplies, and stock;
  • Clean floors and work surfaces on a regular basis;
  • Provide daily reports of the general condition of the facility with respect to safety, sanitation, equipment operation, and maintenance, as well as environmental monitoring of the assigned areas;
  • Work with supervisor and investigators to review and revise policies and procedures;
  • Assist in training new animal users and students regarding laboratory policies and procedures;
  • Operate and maintain animal care equipment, including the washing and cleaning of cages;
  • Ensure that animal populations are treated humanely;
  • Attend animal care meetings and other meetings as required;
  • Perform other duties as directed by management.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Familiarity with Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word, or demonstrated ability to learn new systems.
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures to ensure the safe and effective operation of facilities.

Additional Considerations
  • Experience with animal husbandry and animal handling practices, with rodent animal experience a plus.
  • Experience with animal health documentation.
  • Experience maintaining sanitation protocols and control measures necessary to prevent animal disease.
  • Professional experience relating to animal science, veterinary technology, or related areas is helpful.

Physical Demands
  • Requires frequent walking, bending, crouching, pushing/pulling and carrying.
  • Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds with accommodation.
  • This position requires direct contact with a wide variety of animals. Some of these animals commonly cause allergenic reactions that can worsen over time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes, and/or airborne particles, wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, and risks of exposures.
  • The position requires the wearing of personal protective gear.

Conditions of Employment:

This is a part-time wage position working up to an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a calendar year with no benefits.
