Description :

Overview : Responsible for transporting children to and from school, following a preplanned route according to schedule.

Drives bus carefully and in compliance with traffic regulations. Assumes responsibility for the safety of the children in loading, unloading and transporting them.

Instruct children in safety precautions and practices. Monitors student behavior and reports to supervisor when necessary.

Keeps operational records and reports defects or problems with vehicles. Maintains a neat environment. Performs related work as required.

Starting $18 per hour

Classification : Non-Exempt Hourly (seasonal)

Reports to : Program Director

Duties & Responsibilities

Drivers should be courteous and respectful of children at all times providing service in a friendly and supportive manner.

Transport children to and from public schools as assigned by the schedule and operate the buses in a safe, approved manner.

Provide transport for assigned field trips and in other instances when requested by the immediate supervisor, Assistant Director or an authorized supervisor.

  • Maintain a moving violation-free personal and professional driving record and be prepared to have this record checked on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Keep the vehicles in proper working order at all times. Take buses to approved dealerships or vendor to have safety, maintenance, repairs done;
  • maintain proper records of all work and inspections. When appropriate, have estimates submitted to supervising personnel for approval;

have work completed on a timely basis arranging the schedule for the least interference to Center use of buses.

Keep vehicles properly fueled at approved stations and follow procedures for payment of same. Make note of and recommend repairs or maintenance not normally scheduled but needing attention.

Secure approval for all costs and work.

Perform a daily safety check of buses before transporting children. This should include all mechanical parts, tires, mirrors, horn, windshield wipers, brakes, doors, seats, windows;

never use a vehicle that is not in proper working order.

On most instances, the driver should work with the adult assistant assigned to the bus to see that all phases of the transportation are conducted in a safe manner.

This includes boarding and exiting the bus, children remaining seated during travel, reasonable conduct on the bus, filling out attendance sheets for all transported children, signing them into the Centers after pickup and delivery, clearing the bus after arrival to be certain that all have exited.

  • All drivers should be certified as a CDL and keep certification current. Drivers should have a First Aid and CPR card and be able to perform same in an emergency.
  • Keep a First Aid kit and all emergency equipment and supplies on the bus in proper order. Replace same if necessary after approval from supervisor.
  • Be familiar with and strictly adhere to all Center policies regarding the use, operation, maintenance, and repair of the buses.
  • Keep the buses clean both inside and out. The interior of the bus should be cleaned daily of litter, spills, and dirt. Windshields should be clean at all times;

windows both inside and out should be checked daily.

  • Buses should be parked in approved locations and secured against theft in an approved manner. Any vandalism should be immediately reported to the supervisor and proper authorities.
  • Be prepared to document any and all incidents of an unusual or emergency nature. Report such incidents immediately to the supervisor and seek assistance as quickly as possible.
  • Call the Center immediately should there be a delay in returning to the facility or arriving at the designated location;
  • notify and seek immediate assistance from proper emergency medical units, police or fire FIRST in the event of an accident or breakdown;

then notify the Center for assistance.

Remain flexible in regards to transport schedules so as to assist the Center in covering all the varied needs of the program and children.

Assist Center personnel in case of any emergencies, disaster, or bad weather concerns.

Seek further training or education as necessary to keep skill levels at peak performance.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to frequently walk, grasp, push, kneel and stand
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time while operating a computer
  • Must be able to endure repetitive wrist, hand and / or finger movement while operating office equipment
  • Requires clarity of vision at close distances while operating a computer
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function

Requirements :

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • Valid CDL (B) License with a P rating and clear driving record
