JOB TITLE: PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

SUPERVISOR: Clinical Supervisor

STATUS: Non-exempt, subject to overtime rules

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or equivalent.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Peer Support Specialist certification is preferred or the candidate must satisfy relevant state requirements for Certified Peer Recovery Supporter within 12 months. Certified Peer Recovery Supporters have an identified specialty of mental health and/or substance use disorder based upon their personal recovery experience. The position requires a valid driver’s license, with no disqualifying driving infractions within the last three (3) years subject to the Corporation Handbook and/or guidelines set forth by our insurance carrier; reliable transportation; and adequate levels of insurance and insurability. This position also requires eligibility for placement into specific programs given specific criminal background history which is guided by specific reference to the following Ohio Revised Code Sections: ORC 3301.32 Criminal Records Check for those who work with children; OCR 3712.09 Criminal Records Check for those who work with older adults; OCR 109.572 Criminal Records check for those who work with children in alcohol and drug program.

This position requires experience working with older teens or adults with complex needs.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the ability to write and speak effectively in both small and large group settings; the ability to work independently and cooperatively while promoting positive internal and external customer relations and building strong partnerships within the community; and the ability to establish and maintain effective, interpersonal relationships with clients and significant others.

WORKING SCHEDULE: The Corporation is open 8:00 am – 7:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am – 5:30 pm on Friday. Hours for this position are dictated by client and corporation need but based on 40-hour work week. 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Mon. - Fri. is standard, with after-hours availability and the willingness to work flexible hours as needed.

DESCRIPTION: The Peer Support Specialist uses their own unique, life-altering experience in order to guide and support others who are in some form of recovery. This typically refers to patients recovering from addiction, mental health disorders and/or abuse.

Peer Support Specialists work in conjunction with highly trained and educated professionals. They fill a gap by providing support from the perspective of someone who has first-hand experience, something that professionals cannot learn from training or education.

JOB DUTIES:

  • The Peer Support Specialist first and foremost uses their personal experiences to develop meaningful and trusting relationships with participants of the program, acting as a mentor. As someone who successfully manages their own recovery, the Peer Support Specialist provides clients an example of what they can strive for in their recovery.
  • In order to support the treatment efforts, the Peer Support Specialist handles some of the logistics of clients’ arrival and departure. This includes arranging transportation for the client, managing follow-up appointments, and coordinating with other CCC staff members who are on the treatment team.
  • The Peer Support Specialist works to build a community of both clients and staff that is supportive and conducive to individual growth and recovery. They assist in the creation and implementation of social activities and help create a positive environment for everyone.
  • Attend a variety of Learning Community regional and state wide meetings, conferences, as required or directed for MH/SUD education, outreach and dissemination of program materials/content – based on program engagement needs.
  • Work closely with our in-house staff of CPST workers who offer case management and coordination of services developed for the clients. Provide additional support for clients, particularly as they transition from recovery back into the general community. This can include continued healthcare, housing, job assistance, and additional treatment services as well as support in the task of finding or re-integrating with friends, family, and outside communities.
  • Provide advocacy, client education and support in accessing community-based programs for medical, SUD and mental health treatment.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings to review clinical cases, as well as, policy updates.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliant case file documentation both in electronic and paper format in accordance with program standards.
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Supervisor, complete required program reports– track all individuals being served by the program.
  • Complete all documentation in a legible and timely manner according to the policies of CCC, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addition Services, and CARF, and provide necessary data for statistical and billing purposes.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all applicable CCC policies and procedures and function according to these standards.
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to all pertinent federal, state, and local laws, standards of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, CARF Accreditation Standards, and appropriate professional ethical standards.
  • Perform other assigned and related duties specific and customary to the department in which they are assigned.
