Position Overview:
Functions as an instrument technician, coordinating and assembling appropriate instrumentation for each individual case, passing instrumentation, appropriate medications, and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Follows the established plan of care and provides direct surgical care interventions within the scope of practice. Works under the supervision of the OR Clinical Coordinator, Director of Surgical Services and/or RN (Circulator). Collaborates with unit/hospital staff and other health professionals.
Essential Functions:
a) Uses acceptable standards of practice based on AORN/AST Standards to help the individual/family identify and meet basic health need and to achieve a positive surgical outcome.
b) Works independently as a Scrub Technician displaying expert knowledge of surgical instrumentation for a variety of cases.
c) Understands surgical techniques and recognizes breaks in techniques.
d) Works closely with the Circulating RN to assist Surgeon to perform cases in a timely manner and organizes work to reduce downtime between cases.
e) Promotes a climate in which patients can act in their own interest or intervenes when they are unable to do so.
f) Uses nursing process, in collaboration with the Circulating RN, to provide patients education and patient care planning.
g) Uses available resources to help bring a better understanding of specific surgical processes to fellow workers.
h) Works to achieve desired health care outcomes by effectively utilizing human and material resources.
i) Is accountable for the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities related to nursing practice across all roles, within the scope of practice.
j) Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Physical Demands: Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods. Fine motor skills. Visual acuity.
Qualifications & Skills:
a) Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Must be a graduate of an approved Surgical Technician program.
b) Training & Experience: BCLS Certification. Must have had experience in OB, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Plastics, Dental, and Urology cases.
c) Job Knowledge: Knowledge of surgical instrumentation - use, care, and cleaning. Ability to manage instruments in the variety of cases listed above.
