Description
Position Summary: The Quality Editor is the guardian of Community Impact style and grammar for the print newspaper, website, and our daily email newsletter. The Quality Editor will ensure readers receive accurate and informative news in their inbox daily by utilizing first-rate editing skills and collaborating with editors to create emails in Hubspot. The Quality Editor will also support print production by serving as an editor for hard news and features written by the company’s journalists and will move print pages through the workflow process.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
First-rate editing skills
Proficiency in editing both hard news and features
Expert knowledge of AP Style
Excellent organizational and time-management skills
Ability to copyfit pages in a content management system
Ability to manage the production of newsletter content
Basic knowledge and understanding of the modern journalism industry
Ability to perform assigned job responsibilities promptly with minimal supervision
Ability to hit daily production deadlines
Ability to learn industry-specific software, including content management systems and email service providers
Relationship To Other Positions
Reports directly to the Senior Editor or Managing Editor
Responsibilities Of a Quality Editor
Edit daily digital and monthly print content, including hard news, features, and briefs as needed for tone and style
Produce and edit the daily newsletter product in assigned markets
Edit CI Storytelling pieces for style and quality
Track and report weekly analytics for newsletter product
Provide recommendations and feedback to the Content Director and Managing Editors regarding the quality of work submitted by Reporters, Editors, MPJs, freelance writers, photographers, and interns, as applicable
Stay up to date with AP Stylebook updates by communicating recommendations to Managing Editors, and updating CI’s Style Guide regularly.
Audit monthly print newspapers and 10% of website content to provide feedback to Editors and Managing Editors
Oversee approval/denial of event submissions for Community Impact’s online calendar
Fill in for Editor vacancies by supporting the market’s production process by moving pages through statuses.
Commit to the highest level of accuracy and complete all tasks within established deadlines
Ensure our readers get the highest quality news by adhering to Community Impact’s editorial stylebook and AP style guidelines
Must have access to reliable transportation
Comply with other job-related instructions and perform any other duties the Content Director, Managing Editor, Senior Editor or any other supervisor(s) consider reasonably related to their primary job responsibilities
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
College degree—preferably in journalism—or related coursework
At least 1 year of full-time experience with print or digital publication(s), or equivalent experience
Relevant experience with editing, AP Style
Ability to pass the company's writing and editing tests
