Purpose
Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons/employees participating in aquatics programs/activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. The incumbent works under general supervision of the Head Lifesaving Instructor (HLI) and Aquatics Specialist at a recreation center, where he/she performs and carries out the policies of the Department of Recreation with respect to pool maintenance, lifeguarding, recreational programs, maintaining discipline, administering emergency first-aid, following work rules, and providing customer service.
2. The incumbent's primary role includes, but is not limited to, guarding the swimming pool to direct water safety and prevent accidents; ensuring that non-swimming participants stay in shallow water; making rescues and administering emergency first-aid; maintaining order and discipline of participants; checking swimmers' clothing into the locker rooms; checking for proper maintenance of pool equipment, pool vacuuming and cleaning, treating pool water to maintain proper chemical balance, cleaning decks, gutters and scum lines, backwash filters and cleaning hair catches, cleaning restrooms, guard room and shower rooms.
3. Assist with gathering information and maintaining various records relating to pool operations such as daily water conditions and attendance reports.
4. Attends certification and in-service trainings to maintain important lifesaving skills.
