Job Summary
Reporting to the Vice President, Chief Counsel - Marketing & IP, and Government Affairs, the Senior Legal Specialist, Marketing & Intellectual Property (IP) will provide legal support for marketing and IP-related matters on an enterprise-wide basis. You will handle legal reviews for a wide variety of marketing and sales communications, and work with brand and marketing personnel. You will also provide support on discrete IP-related activities.
Position Responsibilities
- Under attorney supervision, support key activities on an enterprise-wide basis in connection with legal department's support for marketing matters, including:
- Management of day-to-day legal reviews of marketing and sales materials consistent with applicable laws and company policies (e.g., review of advertising in all mediums, point-of-sale materials, customer/trade materials, press releases)
- Review and provide guidance on a variety of social media campaigns and related communications
- Primary support on consumer promotions (sweepstakes, contests, premium offers, cause marketing, etc.), including development/review of promotional rules and assistance on state-specific compliance requirements (e.g., state commercial co-venture filings, dairy promotion registrations/clearances)
- Development of claims substantiation letters (e.g., for network clearance)
- Compliance support for marketing-related company commitments (e.g., children's advertising pledge)
- Label reviews
- Assist on IP (primarily trademark) matters as needed and directed by manager, such as:
- The preparation and filing of trademark applications, both domestic and foreign, in some cases in coordination with external counsel
- Gathering evidence from internal stakeholders for the prosecution and maintenance of our global trademark portfolio
- Coordinate notarization and legalization of documents
- Help maintain database of existing trademark licenses
- Develop guidelines and "self-help" tools (e.g., FAQs) related to support activities
- Assist in developing and conducting Legal training related to support activities
- Participate in special projects, including establishing strategies, guidelines, processes, and procedures, to enable the IP and Marketing team to provide best in class service to the enterprise.
Position Qualifications
- Paralegal with 5 years of experience in a law firm and/or corporate department handling a variety of marketing and IP-related matters.
- Experience supporting marketing related activities, including review of marketing and social media campaign assets, in a CPG related business is ideal, if not essential.
- Food industry experience (including with FDA and/or USDA labeling requirements) is a plus but not required.
- Working knowledge of trademark filings and procedures is a plus but not required.
- Able to communicate effectively with all internal constituents from employees to senior management, as well as external organizations including potentially government agencies, non-governmental organizations, trade associations and outside counsel.
