The Grants Accountant is responsible for supporting the functions related to timely and accurate grant and contract accounting including the maintenance, reconciliation, and reporting of all restricted operating grants, contracts and agreements post award.
This position advises and monitors principal investigators and the financial administration of grants and contracts. This position is required to work collaboratively with the Office of Sponsored Programs, business office, Research and Development Corporation, principal investigators, grantees and grantors. This position reports to the Director of Revenue Management.

Grant and Contract Duties & Responsibilities
- Serves as primary liaison for the Accounting Department with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Principal Investigators for the accounting and financial reporting of local, state, and federal grants and contracts;
- Establishes and coordinates the setup of new grant accounts or appropriate maintenance of existing accounts.
- Monitors and reports monthly the financial position of all grant, contract/restricted and Corporation budgets for internal distribution to principal investigators and the Office of Sponsored Programs;
- Review and approve operating and capital transactions for allowability and budgetary compliance related to the University and the Research and Development Corporation grants and contracts;
- Monitors grant and categorical reports for accuracy and appropriateness of expenditures to facilitate auditing procedures;
- Prepares, records, and submits required invoices and/or documentation for private, state, and federal grants and contracts;
- Prepare and submit for review all required monthly, quarterly, annual and other financial reports of all grants and contracts to the corresponding private, state, and federal agencies with accuracy and within required deadlines
- Assists Director with grant re-budgets and prior approval requests (e.g. Key Personnel Requests & No-cost Extensions)

- Interprets financial regulations and accounting policies and procedures from private, state, and federal agencies and assists the University Business Office and the Research and Development Corporation in meeting requirements;
- Prepares financial status reports and studies for grants and contracts per schedule and as needed.
- Provides supervisors with historical information, accurate fiscal projections, and reports as requested;
- Prepares financial year-end closeout of all grants and contracts,
- Prepares financial documentation related to all grants and contracts for the annual audit;

Minimum Education
Bachelor's
Required Licenses/Certification
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
- 1-3 years experience with financial or grants management in higher education, government agency, foundation or non-profit organization
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and database software such as Word, Excel and Access.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Excellent critical thinking, communication, and team-building skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters degree in accounting or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships across departments or with external partners.
- Experience in higher education setting.
- Experience in grants accounting.
- Knowledge of Banner and QuickBooks
Required Skills
Must possess a high level of accuracy and be detail oriented.
- Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of basic accounting skills
- Knowledge of Federal grant accounting standards is a plus.
Required Experience

At least 2 years of general accounting experience or equivalent experience managing grants. This should include processing complex financial transactions, ensuring compliance, recordkeeping, and preparation of monthly, quarterly and/ or annual reporting.
