What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Editor, WIRED.com position at Conde Nast?
Job Description
WIRED is seeking a creative, experienced editor to oversee some of our most ambitious reporting. We are a global publication covering humanity’s biggest challenges, the stories of the people trying to solve them, and the role technology plays in them. In this role, you’ll take the lead on packages and special projects that delve deeper into the most important topics. You’ll also have a hand in daily news and analysis, helping web editors elevate stories and prioritize coverage areas.
In all contexts, your job as deputy site editor will be to keep us always thinking bigger. You’ll need to bring creativity, ambition, and foresight: What pressing issues and meaningful moments in the coming months would justify a major reporting effort? What big bets can WIRED take that will set the agenda for how people think about technology and the future? How can we pool the resources of our global team of staff writers and network of freelancers to tell stories that others are missing?
You’ll work closely with editors all across the WIRED newsroom to conceive and then shepherd editorial packages to fruition. You’ll also work with our commercial team to identify topics that might interest an advertiser while remaining strictly editorially independent (“built-if-bought” projects). You may also edit some of our regular columnists, and provide backup for editors across WIRED’s daily coverage areas when necessary.
We’re looking for someone who can be a fount of fresh ideas as well as an enthusiastic champion of other people’s ideas; a catalyst for innovation and collaboration; and a deft editor who knows how to encourage writers and fellow editors while pushing them to do their best work. Having a background in science or tech reporting would be helpful, but it’s less important than a track record of producing top-quality, exciting, thought-provoking journalism on whatever topic.
This role can be based in either the San Francisco Bay Area or New York City and will report to the WIRED Executive Editor, News.
Responsibilities:
Take the lead on editorial packages that tackle the biggest topics that we cover
Assign, oversee, and edit stories from staff and freelance writers across the globe
Work with other editors and writers to develop and fine-tune ambitious and original ideas
Work closely with WIRED’s art, production, research, copy editing, and social teams
Coordinate with other departments within Condé Nast to ensure that WIRED’s editorial standards are consistently met
Top edit junior writers and section editors
Skills and Qualifications:
8 years of digital editorial experience, with a strong focus on science or tech coverage
Experience managing a large group of internal and external writers
Experience with and a curiosity about stories that explain how technology impacts all of our lives in big and small ways
Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with a team of fact checkers, copy editors, designers, photo editors, digital producers, social media producers, and other story editors
Facility with headlines, subheads, captions, and other elements of story building and promotion
A clear, engaging, jargon-free writing and editing style
