What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cellar Assistant position at Confidential?
We are a small winery focused on producing premium Italian, Bordeaux and Rhône varietals from estate properties we source from in Santa Barbara County. Our winery and tasting room is located in Buellton, CA. We are looking for a cellar worker and assistant to the head winemaker to join our lean production team.
Responsibilities:
- Cleaning, maintaining, and improving winery equipment and facility
- General cellar work based on day to day operations and owner needs
- Forklifting - unloading and loading fruit, safely driving and stacking full barrels
- Creating and executing a thorough sanitizing plan for all equipment
- Red processing – crushing, sorting, dumping, quality control
- Red fermentation management - punch downs, pump overs, sensory, etc.
- Bladder press operation and quality control
- Additions - yeast, acid, nutrients
- Barrel work - cleaning, steaming, filling, emptying, and topping
- Racking, transferring/blending both juice and wine
- Sampling
- Keeping detailed logs
- Hiring, managing, and coordinating interns
- Coordinating incoming fruit schedules and lab analysis
- Understanding actions required based on lab analysis and sensory checks
- Pouring wines at sales events and in house tastings as needed
- More cleaning and sanitizing. Must be willing to learn
Requirements:
- Team player mentality, self-starter, passion, and enthusiasm for winemaking
- Ability to manage time, work independently, and strive for efficiency
- 2 years working directly in a cellar environment or demonstrated ability to thrive in this environment
- Effective communication skills in English
- The ability to work long, flexible hours through harvest time
- Ability to stand for long periods of time, repeatedly lift 50 lbs, etc.
- Forklift experience 2 years, winemaking experience 3 years
- Good taste in music, love of food, appreciation of art, culture and fine wine
