This position needs to be filled immediately and extends through September 23, 2022.

Organization Overview
Congregations Organized for Prophetic Engagement (COPE) is a 501(c)3 faith-based organization, established in 2000 by a core group of pastors. Our mission is to train and develop the capacity of religious and lay leaders in congregations and across the Inland Empire to protect and revitalize the communities in which they live, work, and worship. We recruit, train, and develop grassroots leaders, youth and adults, in the principles of community organizing to identify and develop systemic solutions to the conditions they face. As a multi-issue organization, COPE’s work addresses:

  • Educational inequity through various school reform efforts
  • Access to quality health care for vulnerable populations through policy advocacy, community education, and special programs
  • Housing justice to advocate for systems that prevent housing discrimination, displacement, and ensure access to affordable and secure housing
  • Mass incarceration through various justice reform efforts to end the cycle of incarceration that largely impacts poor communities of color

Job Summary: We have a chance to begin re-shaping the future of the Inland Empire and our State through voter outreach, education and mobilization. We are currently seeking a canvasser to work within the civic engagement department. The canvasser will be responsible for contacting voters through a door-to-door canvassing project. A Canvasser essentially engages and increases citizen participation toward important voter issues.
Job Description: Canvassers must establish regular goals in an effort to enhance turnout of voters at COPE events and at the polls. Canvassers will:

  • Educate individuals on the voting process
  • Engage individuals on how to get involved in COPE’s efforts
  • Stay current on changes in messaging
  • Be willing to continually learn and be motivated to improve skill set
  • Attend all Training Workshops
  • A telecommunication stipend of $50 will be available for your phone and internet usage
  • Mileage reimbursement included

Skills and Job Expectations:

  • Ability to walk on average three to four blocks going door-to-door once you arrive at your canvassing turf
  • Canvassers must have strong written and verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal communication skills.
  • They also must remain organized and accurate when recording their canvassing activities or maintaining their canvassing materials.
  • Canvassers always must maintain a positive, personable, outgoing and enthusiastic attitude. These individuals must be professional and self-directed and able to work well in a team.
  • They might have to do some traveling and should have basic map-reading skills when working door to door.
  • Attend a mandatory orientation and training.
  • Arrive to the canvassing location on time.
  • Canvassing during the designated times.
  • Willingness to engage voters in a professional manner.
  • Follow Civic Engagement Program Script to engage voters.
  • Identify and document voter responses to the Civic Engagement Program survey.
  • Agree to work to meet the canvassing contact goal.
  • Show up for the agreed work dates and times.

Requirements: Though we will do our best to avoid harsh weather, canvassers should be prepared to work in all types of weather, which might include rain and heat. They also must be able to complete light physical activities such as standing or walking for long periods of time and also be able to carry up to 10 pounds.

Additional Mandatory Requirements: Valid Driver’s License, Social Security Card and Automobile Insurance.
Previous canvassing experience is a plus. Reliable transportation is required.
