Title: BLM Wildlife Intern
Start/End Date: May 29, 2023 – August 18, 2023
Stipend: $715/ per week
Term: 12 weeks
Reports To: BLM San Luis Valley Field Office
Location: Monte Vista, CO
Status: 450 - hour AmeriCorps service term

Southwest Conservation Corps’ Mission
It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.
Program Overview:
The Wetlands/Wildlife program within the San Luis Valley Filed Office has a goal of protecting and enhancing wetland and wildlife habitat, providing high quality wetland and wildlife habitats on BLM lands in the SLV for the use and enjoyment of the public, and to conserve these resources for future generation to enjoy.
The BLM has approximately 500,00 acres that are managed and that are used for recreational activities, livestock grazing as well as other uses. The intern will assist with wildlife and habitat surveys and habitat improvement projects.
Essential roles and responsibilities include:
Introduction to natural resource management, multiple use mission and the BLM; Safety, CPR and other trainings.
- Participate in seasonal orientation, resource meetings (when safety/staff meetings)
- Take First Aid/CPR, safety and all other required trainings
- Limited cross-training with other BLM resource departments to gain an understanding of all that we do
Assist with wildlife and plant surveys
- Learn survey protocols; participate in tailgate safety sessions
- Provide field assistance performing plant, bird, insect, amphibian, and other habitat/species surveys to include but not limited to invasive/non/native plants and animals, Gunnison sage-grouse, Southwestern willow flycatcher, yellow-billed cuckoo, common raven, raptors, invertebrate pollinators, etc.
- Assist with data collection, entering of data into databases, and GIS mapping
Assist with habitat improvement/monitoring projects
- Participate in tailgate safety sessions
- Assist with post-treatment vegetation monitoring, fence marking in GUSG habitat, GUSG predator perch inventories, post-fire/thinning monitoring, repair, and construction of wildlife- friendly fence (hand tools), assisting with Land Health Assessments, etc.
- Assist with data collection, entering of data into databases, and GIS mapping
Assist with water management/projects at Blanca Wetlands
- Participate in tailgate safety sessions, assist with data collection and entering of data into databases
- Assist with invasive/non-native vegetation mapping and removal (hand tools)
- Assist with water movement, bullfrog prevalence mapping, and other GIS analysis/mapping actions
Desired Skills/Qualifications:
- College student (or currently enrolled and preparing to start school) pursuing a degree in wildlife biology or related area of study
- At least 18 years old
