Title: AmeriCorps USFS Forestry Technician
Start: May 20, 2024 – November 1, 2025
Stipend: $700 per week, paid on a biweekly basis
Term: 24 weeks, 40 hours a week
Location: Based out of the USFS San Juan National Forest Dolores, CO
Status: 900-hour AmeriCorps Service Term
Schedule: Individual Placement AmeriCorps members service hours typically follow Monday - Friday service schedule but may include weekends or evenings based on the specific needs of the service site.

Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, that is built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects primarily on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).
Program Overview:
The USDA Forest Service has an overall mission of “Caring for the Land and Serving People.” The San Juan National Forest encompasses about 1.8 million acres in the beautiful southwestern corner of Colorado. From high-desert mesas to alpine peaks, these federal lands are managed by the USDA Forest Service for multiple uses. Visitors are asked to respect each other and the natural resources while recreating on the hundreds of miles of trails.
The Timber department assists in Timber Sale Preparation activities, to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. Getting out in the field is essential to this internship opportunity. The Individual Placement (IP) will contribute positively to the local community and the environment by assisting the Timber department in restoring forest resistance and resilience to insect and/or disease outbreak as well as fire across the Dolores district. The IP will engage in projects that will improve acres of land by restoring historic forest patterns to the landscape as well gain great insight to the career of forestry and a path into the Forest Service. There will also be opportunities to shadow other departments of interest.
