What You'll Do
Provides oversight and inspection for maintaining code requirements on one or more of the following: elevators, boilers and pressure vessels, relief valves, vacuum fixtures, backflow preventers, DOT cargo tanks, gas cylinders, high pressure tanks and assemblies, mass spectrometer leak testing, leak testing of components and assemblies, lifting devices and fall prevention equipment. Provides expertise and guidance in interpreting codes and in developing procedures for inspection. Assists Design Engineering by ensuring code requirements are met with new designs. Performs in service inspection on devices in nuclear production facilities and around high hazards such as radiation, beryllium, lithium, mercury, asbestos, confined space, and elevated work. Inspects and certifies new materials and equipment to specifications and code requirements. Provides expertise and guidance to journeyman pipefitters on rebuilds of relief valves and backflow preventers, and to journeyman boilermakers on pressure vessels.
Uses computers to access, evaluate, maintain, and communicate data. Troubleshoots technical issues and equipment affecting daily operations. Independently conducts routine and occasionally non-routine tests and inspections, sampling, monitoring, and data collection activities. Interprets field data and conditions and notifies appropriate personnel of complex problems.
Participates in job planning and procedure development. May research literature for improved technical approach or solutions to problems. May make internal presentations and contribute to technical publications. Processes and analyzes data and may develop recommendations. Able to use complex mathematical models to analyze results. May represent Y-12 with vendors.

Minimum Job Requirements
- High school diploma: Minimum 7 years of relevant experience.
- Associate degree in related discipline: Minimum 4 years of relevant experience.
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., 1 year job-related experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements
- QEI-1, National Board Certified in Testing and Repair of Pressure Relief Valves, National Board Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector, Certified Testing of Reducing Pressure Backflow Preventer Assemblies, Certified Inspector of DOT cargo tanks, ANSI Level I or II Certified Leak Tester, Ultrasonic Thickness Testing, Qualified Inspector of Cranes and Hoists, and Inspection/Testing of Industrial Furnaces and Ovens in accordance with NFPA 86
