POSITION SUMMARY

Dispatcher acquires the information necessary to classify and prioritize emergency and non-emergent calls and provide firefighting, Emergency Medical Services (EMS Incumbent, as a Dispatcher acquires the information necessary to classify and prioritize emergency and non-emergent calls and provide firefighting, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), law enforcement services, HazMat and other emergency response resources to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and responding appropriate personnel and equipment.

Required to dispatch numerous and dissimilar emergency response assets throughout the response area including police, fire apparatus, rescue apparatus, Hazmat units, EMS units Basic Life Support (BLS), Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and supporting resources to include outside firefighting apparatus, outside EMS units, etc.

This position serves as a liaison between the field Force Protection personnel, management, and representatives of outside public safety agencies such as Sheriff Departments, Police Departments, Fire Departments, EMS departments, and members of the public, etc.

Maintains an accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively prioritizes incoming phone calls to ensure emergencies are handled before routine requests for assistance
  • Consistently answers 911 calls and alerts appropriate vehicles and emergency responders and effectively communicates situational awareness
  • Uses good judgment in determining next available emergency vehicles to respond when another emergency is already in progress
  • Must maintain constant contact with emergency responders during routine and emergency situations
  • Expeditiously handles requests for providing or receiving mutual aid by contacting the appropriate agencies and ensuring logistical support needs are met
  • Remains fully alert and attentive at all times during the period of assigned tour of duty
  • Communicates effectively during high stress situations on radio, telephone, and computer equipment
  • Must type and speak simultaneously in situations that are emerging / evolving quickly. Maintains situational awareness at all times
  • Independently selects most appropriate resources for allocation to incidents and assists Incident Command elements through initial stages of organization and placement
  • Monitors all telephones and radios, ensuring constant communications with the public and emergency
  • Answers high volume , emergency and operations related telephone calls, relays information, and transfers calls in a calm and courteous manner
  • Receives information regarding fire danger rating and provides this information to operations personnel in a timely fashion.

Obtains weather forecasts as needed for special operations

Uses judgment when initiating an immediate and accurate / appropriate level of emergency response required, including fire units, police, EOD, bio- environmental, etc, in accordance with established checklists

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Incumbent must obtain International Fire Service Accreditation Congress Certification as a
  • Telecommunicator Level I & II and Hazardous Materials Awareness.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a current Advanced EMD certification, including initial and follow-on certifications by accumulating 24 Continuing Dispatch Education (CDE) units.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a current Healthcare CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of emergency 911 communications operations.
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations to include word processing, retrieval, and input of data.
  • Knowledge of location and availability of emergency apparatus, the kind of apparatus and equipment needed for the emergency at hand.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing using a calm and stable demeanor while dealing with emergency situations.
  • Skill in operating emergency dispatch communications equipment.
  • Ability to work independently without immediate direct (or close) supervision.
  • Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; to lift and carry light loads.
  • May be required to respond on off-duty time during a conflagration or stay over until an emergency has been terminated or until properly relieved by a qualified dispatcher.
  • Works in close harmony with supervisors, co-workers, and others during day-to-day routines and during emergencies. Is required to maintain good working relationships with on and off-base agencies, maintaining a consistently courteous attitude at all times.

Keeps calm and cool during emergency situations.

  • Must participate in exercises by relaying accurate information. Must be resourceful and alert to
  • adequately perform duties.
  • Incumbent must participate in recurrent proficiency training, as directed.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends, and holidays).

Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.

The work is performed in a highly stressful, restricted office environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

Remains fully alert and attentive at all times during the period of assigned tour of duty.
