This position enforces safety precautions on Roadway improvement projects including FMS, signal, lighting, and pedestrian push button installation, signing and striping, AC paving, and traffic control. Will perform advanced electrical/electronic inspection of materials and workmanship, and tests completed work to ensure that it is in compliance with plans, specifications and local and national electrical code. Works with minimal on-the-job supervision, and has authority to recommend acceptance or denial of the electrical portion of a construction project. Work experience and educational requisites in addition to the certification matrix are required for promotional opportunities and certification for positions.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Reading and understanding blueprints, sketches and schematics of electrical and electronic components and circuits
  • Understanding and applying and national and local electrical codes and safety practices
  • Using common and specialized tools, equipment and materials
  • Proper use, operation, and maintenance of assigned equipment
  • Operating a variety of office equipment including a calculator
  • Use of computer programs applicable within the work unit (required assignment-specific programs are listed in the typical training and certification and minimum requirements sections below)
  • Organizing and prioritizing work assignments
  • Timely and accurate completion of work assignments
  • Maintaining adequate documentation of all assigned activities
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Interpersonal relations and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Interpreting and implementing standards, policies, procedures, and regulations applicable to the area of assignment
  • Completing training required for career advancement

Job Requirements

Though not a requirement, the idea candidate will have the following:

Typical Training and Certification:

  • ATSSA Technician TCH1168
  • IMSA Traffic Signals Level 1 or Tech Level 2, IMSA Work Zone Safety Specialist CRT3180
  • IMSA Traffic Signals Tech Level I CRT3181 OR IMSA Traffic Signals Technician CRT31
  • ACI Field, ATTI Field Type of work - Roadway improvements including FMS, signal, lighting, and pedestrian push button installation, signing and striping, AC paving, and traffic control.

Typical Duties (individual positions may be responsible for some or all listed)

  • Skilled inspection of workmanship, and testing of completed electrical work to ensure conformance with safety standards, plans, specifications and local and national electrical codes, building codes, and other regulations
  • Inspecting and approving quality and quantity of materials and components
  • Determining the acceptability of traffic signal and lighting installations using testing devices
  • Reading plans, blueprints and schematics and interpreting specifications
  • Making periodic and trouble-call inspections
  • Using volunteer, ohm meters, ammeters and other electrical and electronic testing equipment to determine accuracy of operation and to locate malfunctions
  • Re-inspecting work after corrections have been made
  • Inspecting traffic signal and highway wiring, electronic components and lighting devices such as walk/wait signals; traffic lights and their actuators; highway, bridge, intersection and sign illumination; and standards, arms, and reflectors
  • Providing technical information to supervisors, clients and contractors
  • Investigation of safety issues
  • Enforcing regulations, stopping operations of unsafe installations
  • Operating hydraulic benders, boring devices, trucks, trenchers, universal hoisting and related equipment
  • Estimating work progress; daily and monthly reports

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency with the MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel) and Windows OS
  • All certifications and training required to perform assigned duties
  • At least one year of experience as an Electrical/Traffic Signal and Lighting Technician I
  • FMS, signal, lighting, and pedestrian push button installation
  • Knowledge of electricity theory and electronics
  • Knowledge of national and local electrical codes and ordinances; zoning regulations and contract specifications
  • Knowledge of common safety practices, and safety hazards specific to working with electrical devices and high-voltage wiring
  • Knowledge of common and specialized tools, and equipment and materials related to the trade
  • Knowledge of blueprints, sketches and schematics of electrical and electronic components and circuits
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures for installing, repairing, diagnosing and inspecting traffic signal and illumination devices
  • Knowledge of computer programs applicable to functional work unit
  • Knowledge of approved recordkeeping and documentation methods, procedures, and techniques

Abilities Required (Individual positions may be subject to some or all of the conditions listed)

  • Working safely in extreme weather conditions with UV radiation exposure
  • Working safely in areas subject to traffic hazards and continuous loud noises
  • Working safely in proximity to large construction equipment and hazardous materials
  • Working safely in construction areas located in rugged terrain
  • Working safely in confined spaces
  • Working safely at heights over 10 feet
  • Safe lifting of heavy materials in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Extended walking over rough terrain
  • Frequent travel to work in remote locales
  • Shift work and flexible workday hours
